The sun was almost set as Michael flew over the last warm-up jump, settling Jekyll into the corner then bringing her to a walk. The mare had her ears pinned flat against her neck, nostrils flared in defiance. Other horses in the warm-up ring still didn’t sit right with her.

Michael guided her to the in-gate, giving them a few seconds of down time to just breathe. He’d done this more times than he could count, but standing at the in-gate like this still made his hands shake and his breathing shallow. The mare seemed wound up too, itching to get her shot at glory.

Given the go-ahead, Michael nudges the grey’s side, pushing her into the arena. She has her head down on the bit, bobbing up and down as she strides into the arena, striking blue eyes already set upon the jumps. One foot in-front of the other, she easily makes herself at home on the turf, now at peace with the task ahead.

Michael lets her trot for a few steps, then brings her back down to a walk. He then pushes her to a canter, immediately opening up enormous. The snow was starting to come down harder now, but that didn’t faze her. In the show ring, nothing ever mattered to her but performing to perfection.

Michael’s nerves ease as he settles the mare, pointing her towards the first jump.
