From what I was told when I went to Latvia is that, historically, Latvia has always been the slave of some country, from the Germans to the Russians. When really, Latvia has a strong national identity, and an amazing singing voice (it's part of Β Latvian national pride that they've been able to record their history and their teachings through song).Β
Since the Soviet Union was so terrorizing, think of Latvia as an abused person who's never been allowed to speak up in any language except his own which only he can understand. Think of your biggest public speaking fear. Think of the judge listening cutting you off mid-speech and asking for you to apologize for something that they personally care about but that lowers you. Think of every word being a hidden bomb, the wrong thing could worsen it all.Β
This version of Latvia (the aph one) hasn't quite the ability to claw himself out of Russian rule then and it's exhausting, nerve racking and seemingly endless.Β
At least, that's what I think I understood. I really don't know what I don't know.Β
