Description "within the ripples and surges of the lake water other voices arose, liquid, evasive, murmuring to one another as their owners bore my little boat swiftly, too swiftly. I blinked and stared, wondering how much was real and how much feverish vision. There were long pale hands in the water, and faces with wide-set eyes, and hair like fronded weed...there were tails with jewel-bright scales....I heard their voices calling to me, around, under behind, and before me in the darkening water. "Its easy, so easy sorcha. Slip over the side and down to us. slip away down... come down, Say goodbye to your pain, let the water wash it away...Come and dance with us in the deep."
Ch7- Daughter of the forest- Juliet Marillier.

Ive always wanted to draw this scene- it reminded me of Ophelias story. This is sorcha saying goodbye to a terrible part of her life, letting the boat take her to new places, unknown.
I havent decided who the figure under the tree is, its either Lady Oonagh or The Lady of the forest- you decide.
that tree was a killer to draw.

A4, graphite pencil on paper. 3 hours.

Just reread the book. This part is one with the most emotion. She is hurt and alone and has to leave for an unknown destiny. Your drawing is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

This is my favourite one of your Juliet Marillier books you've certainly done her justice. there's just so much detail and your picture just makes me think even more of how this scene reminded me of the Lady of Shallot story. The pictures of that story have the same layout as well. Great job.

It kinda' reminds me of the Lady of Shalott painting. I really like the swans in the background, and the fins behind the boat. This really tells a story on it's own. I've never read the books, though.

That is so beautifully done- like the way that you've drawn the willow: the branches seem to capture light. The people under the water seem so pretty and dangerous and you've put lots of detail on Sorcha- particularly the dress and hair.

Sorry it's not more objective, but it's a great piece of work.

I'd like to think that the woman by the tree is the lady of the forest. It just feels better to me that after all that trauma and pain, and even through it, the Lady's watching over her...rather than that Lady Oonagh is watching her.

That's such a beautiful drawing! And matches the narration really perfectly. I love the way you drew the water and how the mermaids look beneath its surface. lol The tree may have been killer, but it turned out awesome. This looks great!
