Freaking awesome!!! Could someone make a PDF with instructions for folding a zergling? That would be much more convenient than pausing/rewinding ten different YouTube videos.

Is this kinda like a blintz frong base folded in half, then you go and make the legs and everything?

Hehe, yeah, I should try drawing out a zergling skin on a paper that makes it look like a zergling when it's all folded up right... What do you think of that idea?

My friend's birthday is coming up at the end of this week and I want to make him a little zerg army. I got the hydralisk down but now I am having trouble emulating your zergling design. I can easily fold the blintz frog base and I sort of have an idea on how to shape it, but the feature-defining folds are stumping me.

Can you give me any hints, rough sketches, or a verbal description of the folds, after the frog base, so that I can try before the instructions are posted?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

axcho In reply to pencilPenguin [2010-08-16 04:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that's quite a deadline. Well, my friend's video camera is not available for another week or two, unfortunately, so it's not likely that I'll be able to make a video any time soon.

Probably the most feasible alternative is taking photos of it, like I did for the origami hydralisk instructions. However, I won't have time to add the creases, arrows, or instructional text, as that takes dozens of hours which I do not have this week. But it sounds like photos might be enough to help you along.

I could also try using a computer webcam, though I've had trouble getting the origami to show up in front of the camera correctly.

I'll see what I can hack together.

Thanks for asking. I want to see that zergling army!

pencilPenguin In reply to axcho [2010-08-16 07:11:26 +0000 UTC]

Photos would be fantastic! I would appreciate anything. I don't want to pressure you, I was just inspired by your finished design and thought that my friend would really get a kick out of it.

Thanks a lot for your consideration. If it doesn't work out I'll figure something else out. If it does work out I'll take some pictures, and help contribute written directions if wanted

I just recorded an hour-and-a-half tutorial video with narration of my origami zergling design. I finished splitting it up into ten parts, and I will try uploading them tomorrow.

pencilPenguin In reply to axcho [2010-08-18 18:43:55 +0000 UTC]

Wow, awesome! I'm excited to check it out. An hour and a half?! That must of taken a lot of work. Thank you.

axcho In reply to pencilPenguin [2010-08-19 04:45:04 +0000 UTC]

Part 1 here: [link]

It did take quite a lot of work, but it's probably faster and more time-efficient than doing photo instructions. Not sure if I'll end up doing those for the zergling...

Let me know what you think. This is my first narrated tutorial video.

pencilPenguin In reply to axcho [2010-08-19 05:25:09 +0000 UTC]

The videos are fantastic! Very detailed, pretty good image quality, and clear (if a little quiet) narration. I think they are also a valuable resource for beginners beyond folding the zergling itself. Thank you, this is gonna be fun!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to pencilPenguin [2010-08-20 04:59:39 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it so far. Let me know how it goes when you actually try to fold it - that's the real test.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pencilPenguin In reply to axcho [2010-08-20 19:34:10 +0000 UTC]

Well I've folded 9 of them so far (4 practice, 5 final). They take awhile but really aren't too difficult once you figure it out. The videos were very easy to follow, as far as origami videos go. I noticed that they tend to tear when I pleat the carapace but, if I am careful, it is avoidable. Also, if instead of pleating you peal up the two sides of the flap that mirror the tail and squash right around where the flap meets the body, they can have wings (sort of like a grasshopper). Zerglings get wings after an early upgrade in SCII--often refered to as speedlings. I am also going to fold a couple hydras to go with them. I'll post pics later today if I get extra time off work.

Thanks again! The party is tonight and I think he's going to like them a lot.
