Erm, only if you do something wrong? At what point in the game did he leave? (When you get to the Twice Born Warlord chapter, you have to do the Betrayer's Flight Quest BEFORE you do Heart of Rage or the romance will stop progressing. When you do Saving Grace, you should get multiple dialogue options that will convince him to stay. Also, if you successfully convince Jaethal to give up her gift in Reveal My Destiny, you should have no issues with the two of them in the House at the Edge of Time.) I've played this romance multiple times and never had a problem convincing him to stick around.

That's not the ending you get if you successfully complete the Tristian romance. For example, this is the ending card you get if you take the option to marry him.

so Tristian has 3 endings, 1 where he leaves if you romance him, 2 he leaves if you romance him and 3 this one?

The different endings are tied to whether or not you complete his romance and which of the six options you choose when he asks you what you want from him. I don't have screenshots of the end results for all six options yet (mostly because I really hate getting through the House at the Edge of Time and even though it's easier since the Wild Hunt nerf, I just really dislike the two phase dungeon and all the Wild Hunt fights)  but from the forums I know they give different ending text.

ahh i asked one person on youtube and she said this (If during his second quest 'saving grace' you ask him to stay, he doesn't leave. If you choose selfless options like 'answer the call' or 'do what you want' he leaves.)

Again, that depends on the state of the romance. If you have a high romance state with him, he will stay even if you choose the selfless option and tell him to do what he wants.

Yeah, PFKM can be super complex in terms of what affects what and how things turn out depending on what your PC did in past dialogues / events. I have specialized pockets of knowledge - can't tell you how to do an evil playthrough or how the Octavia romance goes, but I've done the Tristian romance... erm... six times now (less the last dungeon, which I just hate getting through). I may have a problem... lol.
