This painting was submitted as an entry to the Soyouwanttobeanartist Contest 2013: [link]What this Painting means to me:
I wanted to try a very experimental approach to painting by first applying modelling paste onto a canvas and then layering different colours. I chose the complementary colours blue and orange for my main colour palette because I wanted to show the two sides of one's life. The blue nuances of colours reflect the sadness that one may encounter and the orange-peach colours represent the happiness in life. It's impossible to live without experiencing both emotions. These experiences are what makes us who we are. Therefore the character is not separated from the background, rather she is a part of it. That is what I wanted to symbolize behind the nuances of colors and the soulful expression in the portrait. I hope that everyone who looks at this portrait has a different interpretation to what the character is feeling based on their mood.

Edit (May 6 2013): The Soyouwanttobeanartist Contest officially ended yesterday. There were over 200 entries Canada-wide and I claimed 21st place with 213 votes, 151 likes, 3 tweets and 1 pin-it! I didn't win, but I'm so grateful for all the help that my family, friends, teachers and YOU (my watchers on DA) who voted for me and helped me spread the word! It was a worthwhile experience and I appreciate the comments I received on my painting so much! It makes me happy to know that you like my work!

The woman actually appears to be an unite with the background. It is like the title says, a Nuance. And by reading your intentions, I understand the colors and why the woman is drawn with nuances. It work pretty well, actually.

Beautiful work. The way she blends into the background is really effect full. It was interesting to read what the painting means to you, which stands in contrast to how I mainly saw it as a painting expressing sadness.
