Most people who know me well know my great love and admiration for Helen Mirren. I just adore this woman. So this was my Christmas present to myself, a 16"x20" charcoal from this photo: [link]

This was originally going to be my final for my drawing class, but the instructor wasn't so sure about the quality of my photo (the final was to draw a portrait from a photograph, but it was important that the photo clearly show light/shadow and the 5-value system). The day after classes ended I started on it for myself. Part of me wonders if it would have been done better or worse if I had done it for my final, but I'm pretty happy with it anyway. ^_^

I always feel a little funny doing a straight-out portrait of a famous person - even though I don't feel all that strange about turning one into an elf (as you can see Helen as my blood elf Artie in a lot of my WoW fan art). The whole time drawing I kept thinking, "Gosh, I need to make it good enough that Helen wouldn't hate it." I hope she wouldn't!
