Description I like sometimes to think about musical instruments as something that gives the human soul a shape. And, among the whole variety of wind instruments, saxophone is the one that best represents the shape itself of human breath, which, in turn, is so strictly tied to life and therefore to our soul.

Lovely, still waiting for pictures some friends promised me of their sax(s), so I can continue my Jazz series of paintings. It was a nice reminder to run into this photo. Beautiful angle, love the sense of movement in the background.

I love Vocal Jazz & Blues music. I love the sound the instrument makes & how certain people make them weep, or sing; basically come alive. I cannot paint people, something I will have to remedy eventually, but in this Jazz series I wanted just the instruments at rest before they come alive. Like a performer just before the curtain rises. Ready! Anticipating!
Thank you so much for the fav.s & for this comment.

jazz is good to watch, not just listen to. and the instruments play a role in this, since they are beautiful per se and -as you told- their sound is a pleasure and can have so many different shades of tone.
about musicians... i love the way they usually understand each other in improvisations, the looks and glances, the way they underline with a smile some good solo played by a fellow... all of this can be very very hard to render with a painting. however i think that you could represent jazz musicians' poses with your painting style...

It is something I have considered ( capturing those poses, glances or even just the hands), but it would require very good pictures & I hate intruding on them esp. when they are playing. I do have one Salsa band who has given me permission to photograph them whenever they perform.
Thank you for your kind words & for giving my ideas directions.

i think that trying to paint musicians while they're playing can be an impossible task, if you want to catch details. you can effectively start from photographs - even if i suppose there's not the same thrill, unless it's you who took them or you know they are not official photos the musician was posing for.

Yes, you are absolutely right.
Here is a link of a painting my friend Ckp just submitted. [link]

He is usually a social activist painter, & we often do not see eye-to-eye, but I do love his skill & his commitment.

As this one is about the bond we have been talking about between a musician & his music (instrument) I thought you might enjoy it.

thanks, it's a beautiful painting indeed. however its style is different from yours... i'd say you go a bit toward minimalism and abstract, while that ckp's painting looks more impressionistic.

BellaU In reply to barninga [2007-09-26 21:29:13 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I played mostly therough school up to graduating high school - the concert band (classical pieces), stage band (jazz - loved this) and of course our non-marching marching band - which was mostly to cheer on the local football, basketball teams and play pep rallies - heavy stuff It was fun and unfortunately as things turned out - I didn't go onto a college that had a band so... it's kind of fallen to the wayside, though I still do have the sax and find myself humming the sax parts of many songs that I used to play when I hear them on the radio.

well it's ggod, at least you had a chance to play your instrument for some years.
i played drums when i was at high school, but it was too noisy for everybody around, so i had to quit. my career as a drummer was very short, just a couple of months.

yes it has a serpentine resemblance somehow... even more if you think about the turnarounds that musician's blow runs into it to produce sounds

thanks, mate
no postproduction (except for choosing the correct white balance).
the long lens (250mm) and the wide open iris (f/7.1) together did the trick... i was about a couple of meters far from the sax.
