Poem #10 for "Fright-ing Month" hosted by Xyron7777777 .
I was talking to Retro about this after they adopted the original gothic woman image
from @Dussunder. Retro commented back to me and said that they bet I could
do a poem to match the image. So I asked if that meant they were offering.
The rest, as they say, is history. ^_^
But as soon as I saw how Retro had interwoven the image of the gothic mansion
with the woman, I instantly thought of a spirit haunting the domicile. I even
imagined a story. The beauteous maiden was happily engaged to a bold
and charming lord. The house was full of love and laughter as the joy
of the young lovers seemed to bring the ancient manor to life. The
place was rife with flowers that she so loved and tended. But
as bold young men are wont to do, he felt the call of king
and country and rode off to war, promising that they
would be wed upon his return. But war is a no
respecter of the dreams of young lovers.
When the letter came, she was devastated. Everything in the house just
reminded her of shared hopes cruelly dashed. The empty bed was the
worst offender. But even the beautiful flowers they both had loved,
seemed to bloom only in accusation. "Why is he no longer here?"
Every hollow hall seemed to long for his cheery laughter, silent.
In the bleak depths of her despair, she finally gave in to the
call of the tallest tower, to take wing and fly to meet him.
Her blood soaked into the courtyard below, tainting the stones
with her eternal regret. So, the flowers died back. The house
slowly fell to disrepair and garnered an ill reputation. It
was never sold. And the locals whisper tales of dark
foreboding and trepidation. Now, no man walks
its corridors. It has become a haunted place.
