Description I didn't know what to call this so I settled for Merchant prince (after the Raymond E Feist story). I will openly admit that Michael whelan is my artistic inspiration for doing this one

Big thanks to my youngest son Jack for posing for me!

Tis the biggest painting I've done digitally in terms of actual size. this is around 11% of the full size.

Hope you like it

update 22/10 - changed the colour of his clothes.

Look up Merchant Prince by Two Steps From Hell on Youtube. In my opinion, it fits quite well with your piece.

Looking great! His clothes set has that tranquil quality complimenting the cold colours of the skyline....

Looks Pretty good.
I like the texture of the tiling.
11% of actual size? That's pretty large, must've taken you a while to work on it.

Thanks!

I think I could have done a better job on the background, I think the buildings are a little too much like the ones on the Whelan/Tad Williams cover, and a little bit flat looking as well (that's me being picky). surprisingly it didn't take that long

You're welcome.
Well, sometimes you are you're own most intense critic. D:

I know I am. >.>

Ok, sometimes I'm too lenient on myself. ^^

this looks great, your talent for detail is very clear here I like how the clouds cover the castle, makes it all so very mysterious

Hey Bill...........

Once again your attention to the small details is impeccable, the stone pillar/towers especially the closest one look great, stylized and intricate.

Liking the stroke of pink in the sky, helps separate the draw distance for me. I would maybe add a slight touch of pink to the Prince's right arm, just notch the bright colour of his tunic down ever so slightly on his right (our left) side......

Anyhow, love your style as always, was it tempting to add rock work in this?

BillCorbett In reply to GAVade [2009-05-31 15:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gav mate, infact looking at it now I think I should dull down the far right arm with a little of the blue from that tower, as well as the pink highlight. Good call! Ahh it was ever so tempting

Awesome. I really like the clouds and the added definition on the fingers.
I disagree with ambroughton, I think it looks similar to the first green angel tower cover (which ironically is in the same series as the stone of farewell
[link]

anyhoo, it looks nice

BillCorbett In reply to eternalrequiem [2009-05-31 15:06:09 +0000 UTC]

I based it on both parts of Whelan covers for the Tad Williams books Storm and Siege. I was careful not to copy them though and you can see that when you checkout the details. Thanks!

eternalrequiem In reply to BillCorbett [2009-06-01 15:57:18 +0000 UTC]

that's funny, I didnt' realize that he released the green angel tower under other names (storm and seige)

I always thought it was kinda silly that he made memory sorrow and thorn, and cut the 3rd book into 2 parts.. but I also couldn't imagine holding a 4-5" thick book trying to read it.
the composition is definitly similar to the covers, but I think you managed to make it yours.

looks good

ambroughton [2009-05-31 00:55:29 +0000 UTC]

lovely work, reminds me of Michael's stone of farewell paintings. The darkness of the tower in the forefront with the towers fading in colour and detail into the background is just perfect. Lovely clouds too. Contgrats!

Thanks the composition is based on the last two book covers, Siege and Storm.
