Daily Doodle 1) 16.01.09

I have such a hard time choosing categories
I always leave that to the end, and i end up with an error
Why Because i forget to write the category

OK, so i went as usual and visited this person here (yeah, i go on a daily basis)

And in her scraps i saw her version of this scarabaeus. (again..b..but this time something attracted me more than usual) I really liked the colours and the stock image, and i decided to give it a try.
I had to reinstall photoshop and redo the settings, brushes, short cuts and all so i made this in the process.
Plus i got used to my new painting style

GO SEE ยขmynti 's VERSION TOO --> [link] <-- IT'S A MUST

I'm not even close to her smoothness and strong strokes , but i can dream, can't i

Hope you like

_________________________________________________

ps. I wanted to add a drop shadow but it's complicated...i did all this on one layer, so there was some white paint changing the opacity of the shadow
But it's my first time doing everything on one layer, so i won't punish myself for that

doodle? They're all awesome! I actually like the texture you got to it, it actually looks like a bug! And what's more, the proportions are perfect when compared with the original image.

BlackDelphin In reply to Teo-Hoble [2009-01-19 12:47:55 +0000 UTC]

speedy if you don't like the doodle name
hehe it's good then
is it bugging you
well i think you should see the step-by-step you'd be amazed how it first looked
the proportion was totally off

i'll be motivating you to keep them coming

well it's hard not to be addicted to shininess when you're a digital painter...it's so much fun adding those little dots

mynti [2009-01-18 09:09:56 +0000 UTC]

Hey there Nice to see you try this little bug too. For smooth lines and stronger strokes, try a hard round brush (one of the basics in photoshop, at the very top of the list) at 100% opacity. Do you have a tablet? If so, change the "other dynamics" on the brush - the opacity jitter can stay at 0%. Play with pen pressure and line variation on a scrap canvas if you want, to see how to make smoother strokes.

Also, building base colors first and then details over it will allow for a faster overall method. here's an animation of another of my bugs.. [link]

Also, working on a few layers is best if you want to add drop shadows.. let the background layer be a solid fill, put the bug on a new layer, and the shadow on a layer under the bug, not on the background. If you put the shadow layer to "multiply", it will darken the area under the bug, no matter what background color you've got.

Mostly keep drawing, it will help most of all

BlackDelphin In reply to mynti [2009-01-18 14:37:53 +0000 UTC]

ooh you read that in the comment too
thank you so much i didn't expect so much feedback

ooh a hard round one? i usually work with the chalk one
and witn no shape dynamics, just other dynamics

i normally do that but htis time i used white paint instead of the eraser
thanks for reminding me though

and will do

lets see how it looks next time

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

bluem00n In reply to BlackDelphin [2009-01-18 15:02:52 +0000 UTC]

I work with the hard round brush as well - only changes I make to it (other than opacity set for pen pressure and size too) is to make spacing 1% and the hardness 95% so it's not a harsh line

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to bluem00n [2009-01-18 16:46:46 +0000 UTC]

you're stalking us i see
well i just finishes my latest and it's with the hard brush
so...do you use shape dynamics too? or only other dynamics; i use both right now

and i experimented with the spacing and hardness, but on the hard brush i let it at 100% hardness cuzz.. the tabled dose that anyways

with the chalk one instead, i give it a 5-25% spacing, +88% opacity and 95%flow i just feel good like that

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

bluem00n In reply to BlackDelphin [2009-01-18 17:04:15 +0000 UTC]

That one is a big improvement

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to bluem00n [2009-01-18 17:05:47 +0000 UTC]

you think so
and btw...you didn't answer "so...do you use shape dynamics too? or only other dynamics; i use both right now"

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

bluem00n In reply to BlackDelphin [2009-01-18 17:07:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh oops I use shape dynamics and opacity, otherwise no.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to bluem00n [2009-01-18 19:01:17 +0000 UTC]

that's all right dear
ooh?! you don't use other dynamics?!

Naga-Shesh [2009-01-17 20:51:50 +0000 UTC]

I like this one a good mix of saturated and desaturated colors.Really gives a body to the insect.I feel that the edges could use some retouching tho, pretty much like my lady bug which is bit fuzzy round the edges..

keep up the spirit!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to Naga-Shesh [2009-01-17 21:07:51 +0000 UTC]

he could use a lot more smoothing and retouching but i want to go as speedy as possible, on one layer, and without ctrl+z so yeah! it was a nice experience
about the colours...i want to try some new more colourful combinations so you can expect more like this one

thanks!
you bet i will
you too

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Naga-Shesh In reply to BlackDelphin [2009-01-18 03:21:09 +0000 UTC]

oh one layer...i see, then it must've not been easy.Previously i did an "object study" on one layer and the outlines were fuzzy >.< really fuzzy

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to Naga-Shesh [2009-01-18 10:32:33 +0000 UTC]

i actually didn't notice till i got to the details part
hmm....did you use an airbrushy brush? or perhaps you gave it to many strokes
it happened to me too
here's a good example [link]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Naga-Shesh In reply to BlackDelphin [2009-01-18 12:31:56 +0000 UTC]

i hardly use the airbrush cause i like a good hard one,but i might have use the smudge tool too much. Also i was quite obsessed with blending in the colors that it became too soft. Before this i also didnt know there was an effective clean up process where u can eyedrop from the background and paint over the edges to make things pop out a bit more

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlackDelphin In reply to Naga-Shesh [2009-01-18 12:54:38 +0000 UTC]

good for you!
i use the airbrush..brush only when i want to get a glow effect ^^

ooh i don't use smudge dodge nor burn when i paint...it just changes everything..and i don't have the power to control it

you don't make them pop up by using the background tone you make them blend more with the background that way
but yeah! if you want to blend them really good eyedrop like mad
