Description Anya and Angelique from TG!

A recently not brilliant idea: I will contrive a series of images that will be difficult to paint* and then I will become super good after I paint them**. 8D

*May cause suicide.
**Results may vary.

This is Unreasonably Difficult Idea 1 of 3.

Daniel Smith watercolor paint on Arches 140lb Cold Press + photoshop where the Unreasonably Difficult Idea became an Impossibly Difficult Idea.

Titled for the color scheme. ^^ And for their colors. Everyone has a color. Not so much like an aura. More like colors have cultural meanings. A person's life can be summed up in colors. Angelique's colors are dark browns and olive greens (dirt, shaded undergrowth, life, also characteristic of TG's Underworld, humanity's better colors.) Anya's colors are arctic white and vermilion (purity, mourning, loss, blood.) These colors have other meanings to other people, maybe these meanings come from from a personal mythology.

Anya and Angelique were never really meant to end up together. I created Angelique to facilitate a place for discussion in the comic, and then she turned into her own developed character. She sort of ended up being a beautiful key to a bunch of uglier doors (like Anya's story, for instance.)

I was thinking this winter I would maybe try and draw a short extra comic about Anya and Angelique. They aren't together yet in comic and won't be until after TG is complete, but they have several stories between them that happen long before Anya finds a lost pug girl sprinting through a rainy street.

Caffรจ Latte is the combination of two decent beverages into something much better. ^^

I am actually REALLY glad to see them as a couple. When I saw them interact with Skittlez, I thought that they both seemed to have a wonderful tenderness to them. Even if it's not in the story, I'm glad they have a happy ending.

The artwork is phenomenal, of course. xD I'm seriously digging the lighting and mood. Even though there's so much blue, and I'm freezing right now, I can't but feel warm looking at them~ All the clutter around them really add to the cozy coffeeshop environment. If there was something I'd nitpick on, I feel her right leg is tilted too far away from the audience. I imagine that given the space between Anya's arm and the edge of the couch, her right leg would be at the same angle as her left leg. Just a thought for next time. : D

You're doin' good, Blix~ I'm totally inspired! \(>D<)/

I wish watercolor was remotely editable. XD There are a few parts of this painting that I'd really love to change. It's just a complex concept, arrangement, and angle that all really wonderfully highlight my weak points. :/

But it is Anya and Angelique, and I love them intensely. <3 There WILL be future comics about them. Thank you very much for enjoying them in the comic. 8< They're such a side pair. Anya has always been this massively over developed character with no easy entrance to his story (in comic and technically speaking as a writer.) It kind of makes sense how accidentally Angelique was created and this random barista ends up having access to a giant collection of stories I've never been able to figure out how to even begin telling.

Ah well, don't worry too much about it. ;D Like I said, just a thought for next time and improve work by work.

I would totally recommend just doing doing their stories as short story vignettes. Not necessarily long or with a point, they but could range from glimpses into their lives to full narratives. They don't necessarily have to relate other than the fact that they have the same characters. I feel that if your story is strong enough, and your characters are as developed as you believe, all the ends will eventually ravel up into a comprehensive collection. :> I also find that short stories help with pacing a bit more as a comic artist~

I have such a weakness for couples, especially those caught in a tender moment like this one. As I've only gotten the first two TG books, I don't know much about Angelique and I haven't met Anya (I think O_o ). So from a completely ignorant perspective, Anya seems confident, even pleased in current position while Angelique seems adorably relaxed and blissfully happy. They just look so *content* together... I hope they do wind up together and happy in the end. Simply beautiful watercolors here as well: love the pale blue shine of light from the window and the details of all the books, clothing, and... that couch. I *want* that couch. Rest assured, m'dear. You made the impossible possible.

This. Is. The most amazingly beautiful piece of watercolor work I have ever seen! ...!!! I'd leave you something a bit more coherent, but the words got lost somewhere on their way into the comment box.

Short extra comic would be lovely. These two characters (right after Skittlez) are my favorites in TG; even if they haven't had much screen time yet. :hugs:

And their colors! Your explanation of them! Everything about this image! It inspires me to keep working on my own odd little stories that bounce around my head and have only just begun to emerge.

You are amazing. And your art is amazing too. :hugs: And...Drat the words disappeared again.

My favorite part I think is the way the room looks lived it. All the items hanging about, the Harry Potter book, the magazine the coffee pot. ALL the little details. I also like the blue light coming in through the window, it seems like it could be any kind of day. A bright one with lots of sun, a rainy sit inside and snuggle kind of day.

Plus I like all the touching!

Aw, no worries. Skittlez definitely deserves someone to love her. X3 But in this story, she is not the princess who waits to be saved and loved. She is the prince, who has to brave monsters and climb mountains and ride through deserts and snow storms to save the princess. XD More stuff has to happen before she finds love.

Color!!! The perspective looks pretty good, though that side-table with the coffee pot actually looks like it may have been tough to do... the rest of it looks so well done I can't tell. XD I totally didn't realize that was a Harry Potter book until someone pointed it out. Heh.

As for color, my InDesign instructor introduced us to Kuler colors, which is simply an Adobe web-product (free) that allows you to create color themes and download them as swatches for all of the Adobe suite. I never heard of it until last week, but it's been around for years. It's FUN to play with and naming themes is like naming a cocktail drink, the weirder the better...

[link]

For one of the themes I created you can go here: [link]

Yeah... uh... I like Vidu? I was actually intending to shove art from DA at my fellow classmates in my current homework assignment... We had to create a 5 page magazine, so I'm pimping you, tracyjb & doubleleaf.

I should have asked first.... but it's not for commercial purposes & I literally had no time to prepare....

I have one or two in-progress images I loaded up on my design-related DA account (aka. my alter ego). [link] & [link]

My guild got the better of me & I had to share... I feel bad for not having asked first. I spent about 15 hours on it and it's still not done.

gomennasai!

T__T tracyjb and doubleleaf. >< I shouldn't be in your magazine experiment. Pick a better artist.

I think it is fine, though, to use these illustrations + given credits for a class assignment. Most printed books have in their copyright notice that material cannot be redistributed except for the purpose of review. You're making a review here. ^^

Your magazine looks really nice! I really hope you get a good grade on it. >< Illustrator is hard, I'm only just starting with it myself, though I really like it. And Indesign ... 9__9 ... =___= I just pay someone else to lay my books out for me. So it's a good skill to have. c:

Hehe.
I finished the assignment: [link]

It's my magazine so I get to decide who's awwwwesome... Too bad, you have to suffer an overdose of fan worship. Heh. Actually it isn't that extravagant fan-worship. I could actually do a detailed 1-2 page critique and make it look all pretty in InDesign only if my victims would volunteer for it ... :3

Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate the time you put in answering my lengthy comments.

Absolutely beautiful concept and artwork. It's pretty rare when they do mesh like that but you definitely pulled it off. Curious (and pardon me if this is too personal) - what would you say your personal colors are? :>

Love the glow and mood of the whole pic - and hey, is that a Harry Potter book at the end of the sofa? xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

blix-it In reply to kradeelav [2011-10-09 21:34:09 +0000 UTC]

IT IS TOTALLY A HARRY POTTER BOOK. I debated what sorts of things Angelique would have laying around her shop for people to look at while sitting/talking/eating/drinking/watching/loitering. She'd probably have a 'Take a Book, Leave a Book' shelf of random used books including Harry Potter. There'd also be Golf magazines, and books on historic architecture which may be found in Savannah, and probably 'Time' magazine (the least political of all political periodicals, she figures.)

No idea what my color is. That's the thing. It's a fun game when I come to know someone, picking out what their colors are. But I know myself too intimately to pick a color. I've been going with black, because my own colors are hidden from myself. Also, colorful art stands out best against a black (or white) back drop. Black can be cold and unknown, but it can also be the color of the inside of a womb, warm and safely hidden.

I figure most people might see themselves as black ... any other color, and we lie to ourselves. It takes interaction with exterior forces to draw out our colors. I would trust someone else's view of my colors more than I'd trust my own.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kradeelav In reply to blix-it [2011-10-10 12:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Whee, I guessed right! ;D And hey, Angelique sounds pretty chill to hang out with, as we'd probably switch books the whole time. Other than the ones that you mentioned, does she have any specific genre of love? xD

If I had to say, I'd probably pick an interesting combination of purple and orange for you, though more purple. You tend to use it quite often in your artwork (that's a good thing!), and well, it's slightly moody, but a very intelligent and calm color - which I think fits. :> I'm not sure, it's early in the morning and my brain isn't awake yet. orz.

Interesting about the people viewing themselves as black, I'd probably had picked that out personally if you hadn't pointed it out. Is there any books/research that further explore this whole topic?
