And finally here's the last member of the main Ethara group. There still are a couple of other characters, who don't belong to the main group. I'll probably draw them too... eventually. But at least here's the last member of the main group. And yes, I know I messed up the anatomy and the proportions again. I just don't care anymore...

This is Ikale, and she's an elf. In Ethara, elves are pretty much what you'd expect: reclusive tree-huggers. Elves are typically somewhat condescending towards other races, but Ikale isn't like that at all. If anything, she's the complete opposite. An innocent, cheerful, almost child-like soul, she will be friendly and helpful to just about anyone. Ikale is currently a cleric, but she started out her career as an archer. She was pretty good with the bow and arrow, but when she went on her first hunt and killed a deer, she became appalled by the practice of hunting, fighting and killing in general. The sight of a corpse apparently suddenly made her realize the meaning of what it meant to kill. She immediately turned vegetarian and decided to give up on archery. Instead, she devoted her time to learning how to heal and comfort the sick, the injured and the dying.

In Ethara, clerics are like the priests in WoW. They can heal injuries, dispel curses, cure diseases and erect barriers to protect people from harm. Very powerful clerics can also resurrect the fallen, but only up to a certain point (right after death, and only if the person in question died an unnatural death). Some are also able to summon some serious heavenly smiting if need be. However, unlike the priests in WoW, Etharian clerics do not utilize shadow spells, unless they are corrupted. Clerics do not go out and attempt to convert people to any particular religion. There are many different religions in Ethara, and the clerics do adhere to a particular religion of their own, but their main goal in life is to use their abilities to do some good in the world, and perhaps to educate people about the differences between right and wrong. They believe that a person's religion should be their own choice.

After leaving her elven home, Ikale joined the local cleric school as a novice. Proficient as she was as an archer, she turned out to be rather clumsy in the ways of divine magic. The grand prior decided that perhaps Ikale just wasn't very good at learning the art from books, and that she might be better off learning the trade by practicing it out in the world itself. It wouldn't just allow the young elf to experience to ways of the world, it would also spare the monastery from further clumsy-elf-induced destruction. And so Ikale set out on her journey to aid needy adventurers and keep them from harm.

It didn't take too long for her to run into Hemos' and Keena's group. Ikale decided that this group was sufficiently 'needy' and offered her services. The others decided that having a healer in the group would probably be handy, so they allowed Ikale to join. This happened relatively early in the group's journey; Ikale joined shortly after Totar, Yanko and Ganelon were drafted as well.

As time progressed, it became clear that having the novice cleric around wasn't always as advantageous at it had originally seemed. Ikale isn't very good at her healing spells yet, and a well-intended heal may sometimes aggravate and already bad situation. As it turns out, Ikale also flunked her anatomy classes, because her first attempts to mend broken bones have so far yielded interesting results. That's why, after the first few attempts went pretty wrong, the group usually lets Hemos or Totar set a broken bone, before letting the elf heal it. Her shield spells are pretty successful, though, and as was predicted by the grand prior, Ikale is learning the other aspects of her class rather swiftly. As she becomes more proficient, she even starts tutoring Ganelon, teaching him to use shield and heal spells as well.

As for Ikale's social role within the group; she is the sweet voice of innocence. Despite not being the youngest member, she does appear to be the most inexperienced. This means that she does not always recognize covert ill intentions. She is gullible to a fault and will always try to please everybody around her, even if it means doing things she doesn't feel comfortable doing. She's also not very good at picking up on sarcasm, which would have made her a popular prank-victim for Lon and Yanko, if she hadn't been so darn likeable. The guys just can't find it in themselves to pull pranks on such a nice person. Besides, Arith makes a much more fun target anyway.

Ikale's primary calling is to comfort the injured, and she takes this very seriously. She grows into a fairly competent battle healer, but she may sometimes heal friend and foe alike. The rest of the gang sometimes has to physically restrain her, to prevent her from healing a dangerous opponent, because they 'look so sad and hurt'.
Fun fact: Ikale can't hold her liquor at all. Most of the group members are... experienced drinkers, to put it nicely, but after a few sips Ikale will generally flop down over the table and be out of commission for the next two or three days.

Ikale has also got a pet: Featherfoot! That's right, I finally found a nice purpose for our favorite snowy gryphon. I know you guys have been eye-balling her for a while now, wondering what's up with her presence here. Well, Featherfoot is sort of a left-over from Ikale's archery days. Most archers have a battle pet of sorts, and Featherfoot was Ikale's pet. After she gave up on archery, Ikale kept Featherfoot around. The gryphon still acts as the elf's battle pet and body guard. Featherfoot is a predator, first and foremost, despite Ikale's effort to convince the gryphon to become a vegetarian as well. Featherfoot is smart and affectionate towards Ikale. She will often bring the elf 'gifts', in the form of small dead animals. Ikale usually tries to resurrect these creatures, after accepting them from her pet.

Eventually, as Ikale gains more experience, she starts to learn more about the uglier sides of life. At first this conflicts with her morals, but in the end she decides that she will not lose her idealism. However, she does have issues with the fact that her friends sometimes seem to insist that some people are too evil to save, and can only be killed. Ikale is one of those people, who wants to believe that there is some good in every person.

As a character, Ikale has had quite an overhaul. She used to be a human and her name used to be Seraf (a very bad name). Her personality used to be less child-like and more plain. There also wasn't a snowy gryphon pet, so basically the old version just was less interesting in many different ways. XD

I like Ikale, both in her design (she's beautiful! ...don't judge me), and in her backstory.

This is the first time I've ever seen a post-Tolkien elf who has normal character flaws and a charming personality. Seriously, all the ones I've read about are condescending, holier-than-thou jerks who like rubbing their "wisdom" (really the author's) in your face every chance they get without fear of contradiction. Case in point: Christopher Paolini, the hack.

Your character, on the other hand, has notable flaws in her personality that make her more endearing, and tries to learn more from the world around her rather than being dogmatic. Bravo! I'm interested to see what you can do with all these characters.

Also, I like Featherfoot - a majestic, beautiful creature with disgusting habits found in domestic cats. She doesn't puke on the rug, does she?

Lol. A lot of people like her! I'm not sure if it's her looks or her personality. Perhaps it's both.

I've recently (a few years ago) started putting character flaws in all my OCs, even the older ones which had none before. I actually rather enjoy messing them up a little! XD

Featherfoot? Puke on the rug? You don't know about owl pellets, do you? They're like hairballs from hell. Suggest you look them up.

I love the redesign and her outfit and also the staff. I feel that everything is just so well designed! I also love the snowy gryphon. So cute! I love elves too, oh goodness, "reclusive tree-huggers"! What a great and simple explanation haha!

I have been working for years trying to overhaul a character I made in high school but it's just not working. Thinking about scrapping the character all together.

Heheheh, thanks!

Hey, old OCs are the best, even the lame ones! Look at Uncia, he's a pretty old OC too (he's about 10 years old now). Some of my other old OCs are even worse (total Mary Sues, lol). So don't scrap your old OCs, even if you don't think you like them. They are a part of you.

Incidentally, can I see this old OC of yours? I'm curious now. ^__^

Aw thanks! That is awesome I never really thought of them that way, but I'm sure there are a ton of characters that I have scrapped over the years. My old character was "Toro" and I was looking through my photobucket to try and find something but her design was so weird. She had purple hair and the half side of her body was a tiger and the other side was a human. Really bizarre. Then I tried to sort of change her so she had more android features but she was losing the original qualities that made her...her I guess! Well, if you're interested later on I will try and dig up some pictures from old sketchbooks. XD

Well, that really does sound like an unusual character. How did she end up like that? And what mind leaps did you make to turn her into an android?

I'd certainly like to see some of those sketches, if you feel like showing them.

I will surely share when I find them! I don't know what my thought pattern was regarding that character, haha. XD It's just...weird. I remember drawing her in high school after I saw a picture of Inuyasha and at the time I Liked the animal ears on the human head. Later on I actually read Inuyasha and ended up disliking it greatly.

Ah, lol. We all got influenced by manga and anime, I think. Even though some people do not like to admit it. For me, it was DBZ. For the longest time, all my male characters had eyes like Vegeta's. XD

Good times, good times.

Sparkly eyes of doom!! Yeah, I on the other hand can't help making awesomely overpowered OC's, with perfect six-packs and the ability to shatter rock by sneezing. XD

It's not exactly ideal either. Lol.

Yay, Featherfoot has a home! Now you have to turn your Ethara concept and characters into something--just random drawings, a comic, a story, whatever, just don't let the idea die. You've put too much thought into these characters and their world. I see much potential!

Every group needs a more innocent character, and Ikale is a good fit for that niche. I thought it funny that she tries to convert Featherfoot to vegetarianism and she tries to revive her "gifts", lol. I can see Ikale causing some waves in the group with her clumsy skills and compassion for all living things, even those trying to kill her friends. Your character group in general has such a strong female presence (which is often lacking in action/adventure settings)--I like it!

I never answered the poll asking which of your OCs was my fave. I'm going to browse them one more time and give you an honest answer.

Ah, don't worry about them going to waste. These guys have been in my head for well over two years now. They aren't going to go anywhere. As for stories, comics and random drawings; it's probably going to be random drawings for now. But we'll see where it leads.

I'm glad you like Ikale, and I agree with you about the fact that so many adventure groups lack a strong female presence. I noticed that too. It's part of the reason why I try to make my groups more balanced than that, although I'm not sure if Keena and Arith can be regarded as the epitome of womanliness. Lol.

Kay, I'll be looking forward to it.

I've made my decision! My favorite character is...

Ikale! I can relate to her the most. The two of us share an "innocent" outlook on life--I hate to kill anything, even insects. I also look at both the good and bad in everything/everyone, though I am less naive and more cautious than Ikale. She has the most potential out of all your characters, as well. She may be clumsy and too trusting now, but I can see her growing through her experiences, becoming an expert cleric and learning how to judge people more easily while still remaining true to her ideals, and I can see her becoming a cornerstone of major plot. Having a pet hawk-cheetah lesser griffin would also be cool to me.

As for the character I would most want to meet, I have to say Mogranos (aka Dorian). I would love to sit down to chat with him! He must have quite a personality, being a Dark Lord turned hero-king turned joy-riding drinker, lol.

Blue-Uncia In reply to meroe1313 [2009-04-30 13:36:43 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like you are a lot like me. I can't really stand to kill anything either, and I continuously try to save bugs and spiders that have wandered into our home, by getting them back inside. Most of my family would just whack them.

The only thing I can't stand is bloodsucking parasites. Mosquitoes and ticks in particular. Those I kill.

By the way, Ikale's pet isn't a hawk-cheetah mix, it's a snow owl-snow leopard mix. XD

Your conversation with Mogranos would probably be an interesting one, I'll grant you that.

FEATHERFOOT !!*swoons*
kaaah yes, I love that thing, I'm glad she gets to be part of the universe.

Another sweet addition to the team, I actually really like the design for this one; her really positive, good natured spirit is reflected well though those clothes and colours, her staff is wicked, she's just got this cool overall vibe to her. And wow, she's a pro drinker too, a couple of sips puts her out for 2-3 days :D. Nice!

I'm seriously considering doing this pair for my side of the art trade (I'm really sorry it's taking so long to get into it, my computer has just kinda died over the past two weeks, and I'm going to need to find some cash and get him some RAM before he'll let me back into Painter :/)

Blue-Uncia In reply to xSheepi [2009-04-25 09:44:01 +0000 UTC]

I knew you'd like that bit about Featherfoot joining the gang. Lol.

Glad you like Ikale's design too. As for the drinking part, I just thought it would be a nice counter balance for some of the heavy drinkers in the cast. Dorian drinks. Totar drinks A LOT. Yanko would LOVE to drink. Ikale tries it, but fails miserably. XD

She's also probably the only girly girl of the group. Keena doesn't really like that aspect of her. Being a tomgirl herself, she feels a little threatened by Ikale at first. But nobody can NOT like Ikale for long. Heheheh.

Sounds like you are having some computer issues. I know how essential RAM can be. That picture I did before this one, 'Legacy', that one was a little nightmarish for my RAM too (just 1 GB, lol). The line-less picture I did a while ago of Hellkat and that green dog fighting; that one nearly KILLED my computer altogether. Lol. So you go ahead and get your computer fixed first. I'll wait. You should see how long I've been waiting for some of the other people who owe me art.

That is like the most awesome character I've ever seen! Where did you get the idea for her, and the cloths, how did you get a mind to make up a masterpiece lake that. The staff's pretty sweet too with the crystal or light at the middle, neat effect!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blue-Uncia In reply to Kalrach [2009-04-25 09:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Seriously? Heh, thanks.

The ideas for her just sort of come together for me. I don't usually have any problems making up new characters and adding a little depth to them. (I daydream a lot, so maybe that's when everything comes together like that. Lol.)

The staff is something of a cross between a bishop's staff, which in turn is based on a shepherd's staff, and a star. I added the gem to make the whole thing come together.

The light clothes are a cross between the garb of medieval priests, and the dress of a princess. I also threw in some Greek elements.
She doesn't wear an awful lot of jewellery, because that doesn't suit the lifestyle of a cleric. They are a humble, somewhat poor bunch of people, after all.

XD Does that answer your question?

Anyway, Ikale is one of my 'Ethara' characters. She's just one of the many inhabitants of a fantasy world, in a modern-day setting. So basically it is a fantasy world, but with about the same technological abilities as our own world. The country Ikale lives in is called Ethara (it's ruled by a somewhat benevolent Dark Lord). If you liked this character, perhaps you should check out the rest of the Ethara cast as well.

This folder contains all my OC's: [link] (more will be added later). They aren't all from the same universe, but most of the humanoid characters are Etharians and belong to the same world as Ikale.

I can never come up with something this original. Seriously, every character I write about is either modified from something else or just lame.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blue-Uncia In reply to Kalrach [2009-04-28 13:56:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, all characters are essentially modifications. I doubt there are really, truly original characters out there; they all fall into basic archetypes. If they don't, chances are that they aren't human (or were made up by a human).

Personally, I think the best method to breathe some life into a character is to give them characteristics of people you know in real life. It doesn't have to be anything really peculiar, just some of the every-day oddities you see in the people around you.

And giving them some form of inner conflict will also help. For instance, if you have a character who is insecure or uncertain about themselves, you can either make them shy, or make them try to overcompensate by acting all tough. When push comes to shove, the tough guy may still crumble, or the shy person might end up doing something courageous, or the other way around. That's your basic framework right there. After that, you just mesh in details of their personality. Background, childhood, hopes, dreams and fears. Quirks and stuff like that. Make sure they all make sense (the elements should interconnect, or be logical in this context). They all add to the personality of the character and it helps to make them come alive.
