Description Hi there artists of the interwebs! I wanted to share an experiment I did a while ago, in which I tried to figure out a not too time consuming way of using 3D in my otherwise mostly 2D workflow. It's roughly based on the city of Camorr from the book 'The Lies Of Locke Lamora'. Basically I quickly blocked everything out in Modo (buildings are mostly duplicated and rotated) and then did an occlusion pass, a surface ID pass (for easy masking in Photoshop) and a depth pass.

Certainly captures the feel of Camorr, methinks. I like it a lot!

I would love to be able to work in Modo, or any 3d programme, really, because what you explained up there is something I think I would benefit from hugely in my workflow, especially for "blocky" objects and/or environments, but I never seem to find the time or patience.. I don't even understand occlusion. I get what it is, sort of, but I dont understand how to use it...

Great moody image btw.

bramsels In reply to DavidSondered [2015-08-06 08:03:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah it takes a bit of time and dedication but it's definitely worth it. As for occlusion it's basically the way an object is shaded without direct lighting, so all the nooks and crannies will be darkened evenly and without cast shadows. It helps to give an object volume and allows you to manually paint in a cool direct lighting into it afterwards. (That's not the case here however, since it's a gloomy overcast scene.)

Yep I do something very similar. The Z-Depth pass is pretty invaluable and gives a lot of flexibility, I really find it invaluable. I've never considered using a surface ID pass before.. how do you go about it? manually change the colours in different faces? Or is there an automated way to do it?
I've seen a few other artists (Steve Messing for example) use a really simple specular map which they just apply over everything - it seems to make a big difference. I've also seen a few other artists like (Raphael Lacoste and Steve Messing again) apply really basic textures to the main faces.. just with Planar mapping or whatever. After doing 10 or so concepts starting from 3D now I'm really thinking that it's the way to go, because you can get down some basic colour in the scene super quickly and transition straight into painting colour... without having to try and eliminate all those grey faces. Easier to texture those planes in 3D than to transform them into perspective in photoshop and use some shitty overlay blending mode or whatever
Anyway your test came out pretty good. Looking forward to seeing more with this technique.

Thanks, loving your work as well! Haven't tried that specular map thing, so I'll definitely give it a go! As for the surface map, I kept each group of details (like the windows, gate, etc.) on a separate layer and then gave them a different material so they'd render differently in the surface pass. It's a great trick to easily mask things out in Photoshop.
