“SHHH, keep it down Nuaima! For all we know she could be just dozing off…”

“That’d still mean her eyes would be closed all the way, Aunt Malak told us so.”

“Oh, yeah…Guess we should try and see if she still remembers at least one of us...”

Nuaima lightly places her foot against Amal’s leg then dons the softest, most welcoming voice she could muster and goes: “Amaaal, it’s us, Naima and Nuaima! You know, your cousins from way back when…Like, we used to go out on those evening beach walks…Aaah, those were the days, right? Right?”

Amal lifts her head ever so slightly towards the wall in font of her. Emboldened by this, Naima proceeds to hold her hand and follows up on her sister’s words as she keeps herself from tearing up at her cousin’s dire condition: “Say Amal, that’s a cute plushie! I think it was gifted to you byyyy…Wait for iiiit…Us! It kept us good company back when we were kids and I see that it’s keeping you even better company now, nice!”

From Amal’s saliva-drenched mouth, faint disjointed mumbling resonates: “Hmmmblnlmlamlamlamlahhhhghhhhhuuuuhhhhmmmmm…”

Deafening silence fills the room. Naima turns her attention to Nuaima and tells: “Call in Dad to look after her, I need to discuss something with you outside like, right now.”
