Ack, this took a while to make. Anywho, this is how I think the Mario series started off. I also tried to make the king look like *saiiko 's version of Peach's father, and I also tried to have some of the characters look like the NES sprite versions. Enjoy!Super Mario Bros series © Nintendo

I figured Mario was a random pick too, that or he proved downright lucky in a tournament against the champions of the Mushroom Kingdom, or he only got the gig for stomping a few goombas and bragged about his track and field records in high school.
