idk what your process usually is, but like
-first thing you gotta do is scann your drawing or take a good photo with good lighting( I usually take awful photos which gives my drawings this yellowish tint and one side always being darker, it works most of the time, but makes the actual colouring pain)
-then, I use SAI, but I assume most drawing/ editing programs have sliders to adjust brightness and contrast, play with that until you get clear image
-after that, if you have clean unbroken lineart outline, you should be able to select area around the drawing with select tool and delete it, leaving you with blank canvas around drawing
-if you don't have clean outline, you might need to erase background manually instead of in just 2-3 clicks
-and finally colouring! add multiply layer and go wild
my layers usually look something like this
normal-lineart, traditional drawing
multiply- flat colours
multiply- shadows
luminosity- light
overlay- final one-color layer to make all the colours look more harmonic? go better together? idk
but yeah, hope this helps, there's a lot more tips but this is basic process how I do it
