Description For New York Comic Con the year, my friend Greg and I decided to merge Super Mario Bros and Ghostbusters. Our first challenge was to differentiate ourselves from this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=srXN-1…

Our second was to find a crossing point between the overly cartoony look of Nintendo's flagship characters and the more realistic proportions of the Ghostbusters. We decided to base the costumes on the Super Mario Bros Movie from 1993 that most people have done everything in their power to forget. The coveralls and hats were based almost entirely on that, and eventually, so was our facial hair.(Gregs mustache disintegrated after the first day of the con, might have had something to do with him taking it off and sticking it in his pocket.)
The packs were based off of each brothers respective Gamecube game. We built the Poltergust 5000(ok, so that's the one from the 3DS game) out of a hard shelled backpack, some heater hose, PVC, peices of a muffin tin, and some battery powered lighting fixtures. The F.L.U.D.D. was made up of a 3 gallon plastic fish bowl, a bellows plunger, a hamster ball, a plastic funnel, the remaining cups from the muffin tin, and a skeleton of PVC piping. While we were walking around, I filled the fishbowl with pink slime, just like in Ghostbusters 2. If you look closely into the funnel of the F.L.U.D.D., you may notice that it looks like a speaker. That is because it is, and while we walked around, I had the music from the Ghostbusters NES game, Luigi's Mansion, and all the ghost themed Mario stages I could find loaded on an MP3 player built into the handle.
Now for the rest of the ghost catching gear. The ghost traps were constructed from actual Gamecube units, modified to look like the traps from the Ghostbusters franchise. I will be taking better pictures of all of our gear shortly. Greg carried the Dual Scream(original DS with the E. Gadd etching) and I carried the Gameboy Horror. I also converted a Virtual boy into a pair of Ecto goggles, replacing the lens apparatus with warp pipes.
Greg designed our 8-Bit Boo Ghostbusters patch, and our Nintendo Racetrack inspired nametags.
We are working on fine tuning a few aspect of this project and then doing an actual photo shoot, Hopefully this happens sooner rather than later.

Thanks so much. Β We bought white coveralls and took off the collars, sleeves, and pockets. Β We dyed the bodies the proper colors, and bought blue fabric to replace the pieces we had removed. Β The last year has been a bit of a challenge, but I would eventually like to make the Thwomp Stompers as well, and I think I figured out a way to make them kinda work. Β

BSMario81 In reply to ComannderrX [2014-08-14 02:52:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I figured. Β But let's face it, they gave a game like that to Luigi because of his personality. Β Mario would approach a haunted mansion the same way he has every other adventure he's been on. Β There would be no fear or apprehension, and while the gameplay would still be there, a lot of the charm would be lost. Β

BSMario81 In reply to ComannderrX [2014-08-19 03:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, Mario still doesn't have much of a personality in those. Β Moreso than the main games, but not by much

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ComannderrX In reply to BSMario81 [2014-08-19 03:13:25 +0000 UTC]

well they could try expanding on that personality a bit

BSMario81 In reply to ComannderrX [2014-08-19 03:15:24 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying it would be impossible, but they seem to really like keeping Mario as a blank slate

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ComannderrX In reply to BSMario81 [2014-08-19 03:34:24 +0000 UTC]

why?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BSMario81 In reply to ComannderrX [2014-08-19 22:36:05 +0000 UTC]

That is the question for the ages. Β Part of it has to do with keeping the character as an "every man" representation, I'm sure. Β A blank slate allows every person to add their own spin to the characters motives and reactions. Β Let's also keep in mind that when they changed that approach with Samus in Other M, people were less than thrilled with the results because the character wasn't portrayed as they saw it.

Understandable. Β Just so you know, I spent less than $70 on the F.L.U.D.D., and $20 of that was the gumball machine globe cover for the bottom

It's always a treat to see people cosplay as the film's versions of Mario and Luigi. It's just such a unique interpretation that I'm surprised more people aren't fans.

Are you by any chance a member of the smbmovie.com forums?

BSMario81 In reply to Digit-Aria [2013-10-28 05:53:40 +0000 UTC]

I definitely think I could do that. Β How long would you want it to be? Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Digit-Aria In reply to BSMario81 [2013-10-28 09:48:29 +0000 UTC]

As long as you feel it needs to be. Just cover why you chose the costumes, how you went about making them, and your experience at the con.

One of our members penned a similar editorial, which you could use as an example. Read it here: www.smbmovie.com/SMBArchive/sp…
