For some odd reason, I've learned to work with many shades of dark on this picture.It's XENA! My new recent obsession. I don't know why I keep on getting hyped on these old 90's shows. Lucy Lawless is so gorgeous, I don't even know if I want to be her or date her... or jump her, although I usually keep the jumping part reserved for yummy men like Colin Farrell or Channing Tatum or Gerald Butler... Cuz jumping women, not as fun as jumping men.
I would've finished the part of the drawing on that bottom left corner there, but then I wouldn't have had any place to sign, ha.
Once again, I preserve my style of non-smudging, even though it looks slightly smudged. I usually blend with pencil only... I think it's because I'm lazy. I just think that smudging doesn't work for me, despite the fact that it might make the drawing look nicer and more realistic like other great artist's works.
Standard 2B, 4B, 6B again. Do you think I should work with lighter pencils?
Oh, and the scanner murdered the quality, there are lines and some shading that aren't showing up.
edit: hmm... having some trouble with getting the optimal brightness to show... might have to rescan the pic.

Maybe you're right about using lighter pencil. I'm not very old, but I've drawn portrait for a long time and know a bit about it. When you use lighter pencils like 2H and stuff, it gives you a chance to make all the small shades and make a great contrast, especially with pictures that have more black in it, like this one.

I'm sure there are probably way more advanced techniques. This is kind of old and I haven't really been drawing anymore, but I'm sure there's something to be said about have different ranges with different pencils. Thank you for you comment,

BIG XENA FAN!!! but i must be honest and mean at the same time, it looks more like Alexis Blendel then Lucy Lawless, Lucy has Bolder cheek bones and her head is a bit longer than what you have drawn, but i must admit i cant even get close im shit scared to do portraits so... but i must applaud the attmpt (better than i could do)

Thanks for the honesty! The shot used for reference was actually from a bottom looking up viewpoint, and unfortunately, I have not conveyed it well and somewhat butchered the angle. So yes, the face does seem somewhat short and smushed. Alexis Bledel has not occurred to me though. Either way, thanks!

This ep was called Motherhood. When I first watched the clip I thought "What's going on here? Why are they fighting? Athena hasn't done anything wrong" and when I watched the clip of Xena killing off the gods I thought "What's gotten into her? Why is she doing this? Has she gone completely mental?"

Why cas Athena as a, I hate to say it because she's my favourite goddess, a villainess? When I read the comics I always imagined Athena liking Xena and admiring her!

Well, they portrayed Athena as a 'villain' when Xena was standing up against all the Gods of Olympus. But if you've seen those episodes and think about it, she really isn't. She's trying to insure her own survival like everyone else.
As for the comics, the thing is, they are completely not related to the Xena TV series, as far as storylines go. It's a completely different team of people with different ideas. As a matter of fact, the people who produce the TV shows are absolutely appalled by what is being done to Xena in the comics. So it's kinda impossible to related the two universes.
