These are amazing how long did it take for you to make em?

And also.. how much did it cost to make them?

Oh wow, Do you mind if I attempt a rig like this? Are you open to the occasional question?
I've been obsessed with making the perfect pair for years, but my main problem was that realistically a winged person wouldn't walk around with their wings extended, and most of the ones I've seen fold up looking weird, but yours looks closest to natural wings. My wings I made were sculpted to look like closed wings, so they didn't actually move, but I made a magnetic rig so I could wear them with anything because the harness actually went under my clothes.

I can't stop looking at these! Absolutely wonderful. Could you tell me what the bottom support "bone" is made of? I can tell that it telescopes, allowing the wings to reach straight up.

spring-steel In reply to spring-steel [2014-11-24 18:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Do the wings stay "reaching upward," and what keeps them from falling back into the normal open position?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Bushitaka In reply to spring-steel [2014-04-24 15:50:02 +0000 UTC]

The 'bone' is PVC tube.... Nothing more..

spring-steel In reply to Bushitaka [2014-04-24 17:06:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Is there another tube of smaller diameter sitting within it, so that it lengthens when the wings reach up?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to spring-steel [2014-04-24 18:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Yep: 16mm tube inside an 18mm tube. And a string inside to limit the max extention.

spring-steel In reply to Bushitaka [2015-02-15 23:18:14 +0000 UTC]

What keeps the two pvc tubes lengthened? I feel like they would fall back down into their normal position if you let them go! These are so cool.Β

still tinkering?
they stay in their in/outward position due to the spring loaded mechanism (with gas springs)
they only stay upward by lifting them manually. (Could be made spring too btw. but not in this one.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

spring-steel In reply to Bushitaka [2015-02-16 13:14:55 +0000 UTC]

I am still tinkering I hope that's alright!

And I see; they only stay upward when lifted, not on their own. That makes more sense.

Is the gas spring 100N? They seem incredibly strong, but I suppose the action over such a small distance (when the lever switches over) makes the force required to collapse the wings nominal?

I can only imagine the immense amount of work and research that went into building these, so thank you for sharing all of your photos and comments with everyone else!

This is super cool! Where do you get the free time to make these?!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

ninjafanboy [2013-04-23 22:41:15 +0000 UTC]

you should make ptyradactal wings!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to ninjafanboy [2013-04-23 22:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, i could...
But that is a problem too; my wishlist is too long right now... ( and my workshop too small; the wings are piling up right now)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ninjafanboy In reply to Bushitaka [2013-04-24 01:59:39 +0000 UTC]

can't you make them smaller? like half an arm lenght?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to ninjafanboy [2013-04-24 09:03:31 +0000 UTC]

yes, but i don't want 'small'
big is better

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ninjafanboy In reply to Bushitaka [2013-04-24 17:13:33 +0000 UTC]

but with small you don't need a bigger workshop.

Najawarie [2013-04-15 20:26:02 +0000 UTC]

How much would you charge for a structure like that? (just like that, I plan making the wings on it by my own)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to Najawarie [2013-04-17 21:24:51 +0000 UTC]

Sorry; i rarely make things for other people..
Considering the building time i would have to ask €750,- minimum for it , i guess.
I traded this 'leftover' frame for some leatherwork from Suz.
Succes with your wings!
Will you show me pics of it?

I'd like to ask you a question, if you wouldn't mind.
Did you use door shocks for the hinges?

.. If you mean something like this:

Archangel puppet?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kingart4 In reply to Bushitaka [2013-01-23 15:01:12 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to do a run of XMen puppets, but concerned on copywrites. However, I was meaning an Archangel costume. I make medieval armour so I'd like to use that skill set to actually make a set of wings.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to kingart4 [2013-01-23 18:30:02 +0000 UTC]

copyrights.. yes i think you cannot sell those puppets without their permission..
Nice angel-plans; already have drawings or ideas how to do that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kingart4 In reply to Bushitaka [2013-01-25 19:29:25 +0000 UTC]

Just an idea in my head. The wing structure was the bigger issue. Well that and condoning the money for something that would most likely never leave my house! lol

Was it easy enough to make?

Bushitaka In reply to constantie [2012-08-12 23:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Easy...ehhr.. It took me some time, but that was also because it was a prototype to study some 'new' features.
But.. For me it was fairly easy..

THEGREATTITANICCHICK In reply to Bushitaka [2012-02-28 00:20:28 +0000 UTC]

yea i think i might be able to, but will i be able to make it with thick poasterboard? (like the foamy stuf you see in the stores and stuff?) i'm poor and cant use power tools ^^'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to THEGREATTITANICCHICK [2012-02-28 01:10:03 +0000 UTC]

poasterboard.. hmm..you mean cardboard or so?
I think that should be possible when you fold tubes of it. It has to be able to carry some load, so it has to be strong..
tell me if that worked out! just give it a try.
(maybe like this but then stronger: [link] )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

THEGREATTITANICCHICK In reply to Bushitaka [2012-02-28 01:17:37 +0000 UTC]

no it's like the thicker version of poster board (like it has foam in the middle of it) and the feathers will be knitted with acrylic yarn and it will have boas glued on the top of them to creat more down. also i plan on using brads (those little brass tack things that you fold the tabs back on) for the top point of the wings, will those work or is there perhaps something else i can use? that won't involve power tools?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to THEGREATTITANICCHICK [2012-02-28 08:30:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh thΓ‘t stuff
I would say; give it a try! my guess is that you need to reinforce the pieces by glueing 2 or three layers of that board. you will probably be able to create nice hingepoints when you use that multilayer-principle in a smart way
Don't use that too-powerful gas spring, but change the design to a springloaded mechanism (use elastic rubber band)
use this: [link] that will be a nice start.
