YOU ALL, EVERYBODY... YOU ALL, EVERYBODY!

Oh, Mr. Pace. Mr. Pace, Mr. Pace, Mr, Pace... and some polar bears and Ezra James Sharkington Charlie was the reason I started watching Lost in the first place. How could I resist?

The mark of a truly good character is the longevity of mourning fans go through when they get killed off. Some characters invoke momentary pity; 'oh no, they were so cute, so fun, so quirky. Sigh.' Three episodes later, you have moved on to the quickly designed replacement, admiring them for the same reasons, and expressing mild discontent when they get knocked off, before the cycle of mundanity resets itself.

Fans are still mourning Charlie, and it's been a good two years.

That's a GOOD character.

I'm not one too cry over network television, but Greatest Hits turned me into a fangirl lump of tearful goo... and he didn't even DIE in that episode (the fact that Claire never saw Charlie's list still breaks my heart.) So, with the thousands (upon billions) of deaths on Lost, why was Charlie's passing so emotional?

He was damaged, but gentle and sweet at his core. He wanted to improve for the right reasons. He could laugh, and he was a friend, and he had challenges but always tried to seek redemption. He loved and wanted to be loved. Who didn't squeak a bit when he and Claire finally kissed? Most importantly, he wore nail polish without looking like a complete douchbag (only vaguely douchebaggy.)

Charlie's just one of those characters whose passing actually left an empty space... you could FEEL he was gone. Brave and true, even if he didn't feel that he deserved those titles.

Oh, and we got some fun tripped-out scenes along the way. Poor Charlie, always being tested by the ample supply of cocaine on a lost island.

The Charlie/Hurley scenes were some of the funniest on the show, and who remained steely-eyed at the Charlie/Claire romance? PUMPKIN HEAD!

At the end of it all, Charlie was a real hero. He wasn't perfect, but that's why his sacrifice was so potent. Did anyone ever get 'NOT PENNY'S BOAT' tattooed on their hand?

Oh, and he was a hobbit. A hobbit, people. COOOOOL.
