Description ROUND EIGHT

I sensed that this round could be my best chance to put Lilly Sanchez away like I'd done in our first fight.  I'd rocked her world in the seventh and shaken her confidence.  I just needed to keep firing, keep going forward to break her down.  Another round like the seventh and I'd have this in the bag!  I began to put everything I could into my punches, getting as much weight behind them as I could, trying to knock the last bit of fight out of Lilly.  I watched her slightly reddening torso looking for the openings to bang a little more resistance out of her whenever we got to close quarters.  I didn't pay much attention to Lilly's counter punches, which became fewer as her mindset switched into defense under the bruising barrage of red leather she was taking from me.  I began to visualize Lilly as a mobile, breathing, hurting heavy bag!  If I could just keep pounding leather into her, I was going to break her down and tip the scales of this fight my way for keeps!

I used combinations to her head to create openings to go for her body.  One-two up top, then WHAM my third shot dug into her down below.  Bob and weave, get inside again ...then another one-two down below, my third shot goes up top.  Left hook, right hook into her sweaty tummy, make her drop those black Reyes gloves a little, then WHAM! a quick left to Lilly's pretty head.  Good plan?

Maybe, but there was one problem.  Lilly could take this stuff!  She wasn't giving up or going down.  She kept her feet under her and showed she could still fire decent punches at me while she was backing up.  Lilly wasn't about to fold.  She was grunting and breathing hard when we got in close and personal, and my hardest body shots drew gasps of pain from her, but her defense didn't fall totally apart.  Lilly had trained for this and she wasn't panicking, even though she was absorbing some of the hardest punches I'd landed so far in the fight.

I was now in danger of wearing myself out with my own effort!  Sweat was pouring off me and my sport bra was damp with it.   I felt wetness from my abs seeping into the black waistband of my trunks and the red satin fabric began to cling to my hips.  My arms and legs felt the burn even as I continued to drive Lilly back around the ring.  I was winning most of our exchanges but also reaching my own limits.

Why wasn't Lilly starting to crumble?

I had a flashback to our first fight where I'd finished Lilly with a left hook to her liver, the punishing shot that most Mexican boxers know and fear.  A crushing blow that comes up under the ribs to smash tender tissues in an excruciating flash of pain that can paralyze the grittiest opponent if you land it just exactly right.  I threw a right near Lilly's face to draw her guard up, then deked to my left and down a little to throw the killer shot.  My red leather rammed into Lilly's body, producing an agonized gasp from her as she winced and buckled.

But she didn't go down!  Her face was racked with pain but she ... somehow ... stayed on her feet and got away from me again.  I kept after her as she backed into the ropes but my own legs were turning into lead!  I needed a break to get my own strength back.  We tangled up in another sweaty, panting wrestling match against the ropes as the round bell sounded.

Dammit, I thought.  What does it take to put this kid away?  I'd blasted her head and her body now with the best I had, and she was still there.  Hurt, but still there.  I should have the lead now, something like 77-75 on the cards if the judges were even half way honest.  But could I count on that?  Or could I somehow find just a little more firepower to put Lilly down and out?

Patience! She's going to go any round now! Just repeat the last round. Body punches draw her guard down and a solid right uppercut to the chin and it will be good night Lilly! It's passed her bed time now. She'll need the nap!
