Looks great!

Did you composite the clouds on top? I would love clouds in my moon pics without having to composite. Of course, without any clouds in my area a couple nights ago night that was impossible.

Thank you!
The clouds are real - not composite. - it cleared up right after this and became really boring... so I was lucky to catch this!!!

You're welcome!
There's nothing quite like being in the right place at the right time.

I had some warning on that one - 1/2 hour from moon-rise, so it was easy to plan for.
And my wife's office window faces out there - so I'm always getting calls "get the camera..."
If I had that office - I'd NEVER get any work done...

Sounds like you would be someone interested in telescopes.
I was always interested in space but never did any night sky photography until recently. The town lights seem to drown out a lot of the stars so never had much inspiration. My grandmother told me about the super moon and guess I got inspired. Perhaps I should take a trip to the Australian outback for more stars.

I'm not so sure I'd be into a telescope - I'm more likely to play with the wide angle and do long exposure star-tracks that to get up-close and personal with anything in particular. I also like sky-glow from cities on clouds - but yeah - if I had the outback - I'd be out there... (I'm jealous!)

Sadly I am not in such a remote spot. I mentioned the outback probably because
I've been watching Lost and they kept having flashbacks to Sydney, lol.
I live in Florida and it's quite urbanized with all the woods compartmentalized
into little patches. Though there are places where cell phones don't work. That's
kind of remote, I guess.
City lights, now that would be something to try. Next time I'm in the big city I'll
have to go up one of those skyscrapers and give it a shot.

this shot spurred me to go outside and try some night photography.
it'll take a wee bit of practice XD

Do you want the fun/painful learning experience - or do you want the "cliff notes" ? I'm happy to share, but don't want to crash anyone's "learning" fun
(Thank bajeezus it's digital - can't imagine the cost of "learning" if I was doing film!!)

Agreed - but if that's always true - I should be a LOT smarter

sometimes repeat lessons are required.
case in point: I really ought, by now, to habitually carry my camera. I don't. So, as a consequence, the second scissor-tailed kite I have seen in my life escaped unphotographed today.

oh - I and terrible at that too... (I blame having the larges DSLR known to man as my primary camera)

I'm increasingly pleased with the performance of mine:

Pretty cool!

Don't make me post my 400mm shot

My dad lives in Colorado - and I'm sure the air was clearer there, and he's got an 800mm BEAST of a lens - I wonder if he got any shots...

If I become a real ass about celestial photography, I'll have to rig a pair of DSLRs and a pair of big-bore (for a hobbyist) reflector telescopes, put the rig on a tracking and elevation mount, and take stereoscopic shots.

so there, nyagh!

(in other words, post the 400mm shot, dude)

OK - I want to see this stereoscopic mount (WWII or NASA surplus? ) -

it's posted - 1:1 crop, chromatic aberration and all.

were I to do it, it'd be purpose-built based on the pintle-mounted twin Ma Deuce emplacements used on ships and some tracked vehicles.

the telescopes would, at minimum, be of this class:
[link]

the trick would be precision triangulation. I'd want the centerlines of the tubes to be at least 1m apart, preferably 2m.

That would be a fun project - I can only imagine that I'd spend a bit too much money on it - and I'd definitely make things too complex... I think I'm just trying to justify one of these : [link]

yeah, that's the big boy pro model basis of what I have in mind.
