it doesn't feel so quick while you are doing it though. but yes, it is just a matter of practice ^^

Wow. This is really incredible. The first one is very beautiful in it's own right with the colors and textures and piercing eyes. But the second one just takes it to a whole new level. There's less colors but that makes the eyes stand out even more and draw you right in. The movement of the hair feels more natural and the facial proportions have really improved as well. I also love how smooth the second one feels with the brushstrokes. He also looks like a much more mature vampire with an ominous design whose really come into his own. He's not here to cast a facade or play games. He's here to get done whatever it is he wants to do and you just get that instantly. Wonderful work!

Awesome improvement! I think that improvement also comes from seeing things from a different perspective, it's a fundamental change in the way you see and think...what do you think?
My style has also changed quite a lot from 3 years ago too. I was on hiatus for almost 3 years and when I came back to draw, I noticed I started thinking differently when I drew again. I guess improvement also depends on how your brain matures haha
Btw, just curious, did you start studying art and design/go to art school to improve your skills before you did this challenge?
π: 0 β©: 1
Cashile In reply to jenwzm [2013-10-30 12:57:20 +0000 UTC]
yes, definitely it comes down to thinking differently. we practice to learn different methods/ways of doing things, not because our hands need the movement : D
I haven't stopped drawing ever since i started to take it seriously, so it was almost everyday practice,
but i notice a pattern how useful can it be to just take a few days off and think about things what you've learned. sometimes i go through the process in my head: how would i draw certain things, that helps too, i don't always have to put it down to paper~
no, i haven't learned anything in school, i am self-taught. but yes, in the last 1 year i studied lots of different styles and tried to discover my own :3

Shiiieeet that improvement 8D In only 3 years too. You must have worked your ass off haha ^^ The anatomy is A LOT better, and so is the facial expression. You managed to keep the bishie style, without going too much anime. I do wish you'd have kept some of the colour, though ^^

Cashile In reply to CharlottaBavholm [2013-10-13 14:57:05 +0000 UTC]
thank you so much ^^
well, i've learned a different technique for painting, starting from monochrome and colouring that after, so i am kinda le-learning to color now :_D
i guess you always have to sacrifice a bit for the sake of improvement ;v;
hope to get there someday though xd
π: 0 β©: 1
CharlottaBavholm In reply to Cashile [2013-10-13 15:42:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I'm trying that technique too ^^ It's hard to find the right layer settings/blend modes to apply the colour afterwards. Lots of experimentation!

CharlottaBavholm In reply to Cashile [2013-10-13 16:10:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I'm going back and forth between starting with values, or starting with colour directly XD Can't decide which workflow is better, but it depends on the project I guess.
Both Colour and Overlay have their negative sides effects, too XD Overlay makes the colours too dark, and Colour makes them too saturated ;__;

Although the new piece is fantastic, a 'draw this again' challenge uses the same character, structure, and pose as the older drawing, but redone in a better or newer style. This is completely different, and defeats the purpose of the challenge.Β

hmmm...you know, designing skills can to improve too... not only drawing skills. it's stupid to copy old bad design that you don't want to see any more.

Cashile In reply to SGT-Stories [2013-09-19 09:58:08 +0000 UTC]
the purpose of this meme is to show improvement/growth of the artist.
I think it would'n really show much improvement if you'd just copy the same image plainly with better technique. The vision and the style can change in the years , so therefore the character itself in the pic will change too.
As for me, i changed my character who was just a stereotypical vampire to my own world's "vampires", according to the lore.
In the last one year i tried to find my own style more than before, so my art changed a lot~

TaiusQuinn In reply to SGT-Stories [2013-09-19 09:51:32 +0000 UTC]
I see where your point is coming from, but it seems more like the design changes were from the character themselves evolving over time, and the pose difference is actually based on perspective. It looks as though the first picture could have been a failed attempt at making a slightly downward angle.Β
There's nothing in the original meme which states you can't update the design from the old version, to the new version in your "After" piece. All it says is to "return to an old piece they have done and recreate itΒ againΒ in their styles ofΒ today."Β
