I know I'm just some random girl, but hopefully I can answer your question.
Wildebeest annually migrate to newer pastures, and sometimes they have to cross huge rivers in order to reach said pastures. That's what they're doing in this picture. Generally, the herd holds back until a few brave individuals decide to just jump into it, because there are crocs in the rivers; but they have to cross, so after the first few jump in the rest of the herd follows in a massive swarm.
