Only 15 or 20 times, ha. It's easily my favorite anime ever. I am in awe of the character writing--it's so cute and light, and really quite short, but there's so much character development, so many subtle shadings of implication, and then, in the end, it's so beautiful and tragic. It does what it's trying to do as perfectly as any great literary masterpiece or critically acclaimed movie I've ever read or seen.

I totally agree on exactly all of that. Princess Tutu is one of my favorite animes to.
Do you have a favorite character? *u*

Well, it's hard not to love Ahiru. Really, though, my favorite is a toss-up between Fakir and Rue. I think Fakir undergoes the most dramatic character growth, and I enjoy watching it every single time. He is the realist who grounds Ahiru and makes her hope possible. On the other hand, I think Rue has the most poignant story--yes, even more than Ahiru. Ahiru is only broken once, when Drosselmeyer convinces her that she needs to kill herself. And at that moment she gives up, and has to be rescued by Fakir--which, don't get me wrong, was a beautiful and tender moment. But I think it speaks to Ahiru's archetype. Her hope is virtually boundless, but, once someone manages to make her doubt it, she has no other resources of her own to fall back on and needs someone else to help her. Rue arrives in the story broken, is crushed repeatedly, and yet, even in the depths of despair, never stops dancing and wishing--never fully gives herself up to it. It's not hope that sustains her (she has no hope at that point), it's something darker, subtler, and harder to destroy. Rue expects nothing, doesn't feel she deserves anything, believes herself worthless because of all the things she has done and the lies she has believed--and yet she keeps going. It's beautiful. The moment when Mytho chooses her as his princess and she reacts with disbelief--in spite of saving him and helping him kill the raven--is one of the saddest, loveliest things I have ever seen.
Anyway--I could probably do a whole essay on this. What about you? Who's your favorite?

I see, I understand your point. Hehe no worries, I'm a writer, I like to read. c'=
I don't really? I love all the main characters, Ahiru, Fakir, Mytho and Rue, but I really like Edel to, she's really 'A fairytale' character for me, they all are though. I love stories, so that the anime is about a book itself just adds to the interest for me. ^^

I cry every time Edel sacrifices herself. Every. Damned. Time. It gets me even more because her reason isn't something like, "Associating with you has helped me gain human feelings, and I've come to love you." No, it's "Associating with you has made me wishΒ I had human feelings, and so I wanted to try acting as though I do." I don't even fully understand why that hurts so much more, but it does.
