Description ARTIST'S COMMENTS

Another traditional piece that I did back in June. I wanted to practise using more than just one grade of pencil, so I thought "hey, why not try a nice light grey horse with lots of subtle, light shades?".

Of course, my scanner hated me for that, and decided not to co-operate at all. So I had to photograph the finished drawing with my camera, which really didn't like all those light tones either. This is the reason it's taken me this long to upload it. Almost all of the detail got completely lost, the original photo-scans were like a really dark blue, so I've had to try (and fail) several times to make it look more like the original. Finally, I think I've come to a halt with it - it won't get any better than this, which is really disappointing. It just doesn't look half as good as the original, but it will have to do.

My lesson learnt from all of this? NEVER draw a light grey horse with H-pens again!

Wow, sometimes I just sit and wonder how you do it.

Okay, so, where do I start? Everything looks SO amazing! The horse's anatomy is perfect, and I don't see one flaw in the shading or highlights. I love the way you did the shadows on the legs, and how the muscles really pop. The pose is awesome, and I also must say I love how you never draw simple poses, unless on a reference sheet or if you are asked to do so for a commission. Every single pose is breathtaking, beautiful, terrific, and so many other words I can't list in this comment!

I have to say I LOVE the way you did the tail. I love how high-set you drew it, and then the shading adds so much! You can see every individual strand of hair in the tail. And with the mane, the same thing. It is so detailed and beautiful, and it flows so well! And last but not least, the grass. Even with the simple little patch of grass underneath the horse, there is so much detail and shading in even the tiniest areas.

It was hard to get the words out at first! I love everything about this drawing, and every time I see one of your drawings, I wish I was as talented as you. I wish I knew how you did this! I would faint if one of my drawings came anywhere near this great.

Amazing, incredible, terrific, fantastic job, as always! This is absolutely awesome, and I can't wait to see more art from you, both digital AND traditional!

Aww thank you hun, I'm so glad you like my traditional art It's so different from drawing digital art and I really enjoy drawing like this Although it's much harder to get inspiration, since I'd have to turn my computer on to get to all the lovely horse stock and keep it while I draw. It sort of feels, wasteful I may aswell just draw it on the computer whilst I've got it on! I do have a few horse books though, although they are mainly breed books that just display horses standing straight up. I guess that's why it's much harder for me to sit down and draw on paper

You're welcome!
I really love your traditional art, and I get SO excited when I see it in my inbox, because it is a change from the usual digital art you submit. I have a few horse books, and they have all sorts of pictures in them, from all angles and all sorts of poses. I like to use those instead of using the pictures I print off of the computer. I usually just print the pics that I really want to draw, so I don't waste paper.

it must be hard to shade white horses, but u seem to an expert! love the tail, the hole horse is very realistic, i doubt i could every draw something this amazing in only 2 hours

Thank you! I'm really glad if I have helped inspire you, that's the ultimate goal for any artist, I believe! I would almost say whites are the hardest colour to draw (although black is sometimes very tricky too!) just because it has no real reflective shine, and the shades in some greys are almost non-existent in cloudy weather. And in sun, they just look like blobs of pure white It's hard to find the right balance, but when you do, they are very pleasant to draw

Frithe [2010-09-10 21:52:09 +0000 UTC]

The elusive gray horse, I can understand the frustrations of scanners and gray - they just do not seem to blend well no matter what lengths an artist goes to in order to make them live in harmony. The serenity of the piece is still felt none the less - silly scanners, no? - and the movement and flow of the picture is quite nicely captured. The lack of background actually adds more to the picture than takes away from it because it truly emphasizes the horse as the central piece of the artwork and the small touches of grass further adds the sense of open spaces and freedom that most people associate horses with when they see them running free of any halters or bridles and bits.

cerona In reply to Frithe [2010-09-18 14:07:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I do enjoy drawing all sorts of horses anywhere really, but my favourites are definitely those running completely free, full of energy and spirit. It's that which inspires me to draw horses really, the true beauty and elegance of the equines. Something most people might not think about when riding around their sturdy old routine lesson-horses in a muddy enclosure..
