Description Digital Painting of Hudson, an Orca from Marineland, Canada
Painted from scratch in Photoshop CS4.
Used a photo reference found online, with permission from the original photographer, original is found here: [link]
About 13 hours of work.

Please note that if you but don't comment, I probably won't get a chance to say thank you... so thanks in advance!

Rant in Progress lol
I have found it impossible to get anything done lately! The combination of a Spring Course (with assignments, readings, and two 4 hour 6-10pm meetings a week) and my adorable new kitten (that I spend WAY too much time playing with, and cuddling) has greatly reduced my painting time. Beyond that, I've been in a crappy mood, so when I am sitting in front of the computer, stylus in hand, tablet at the ready, I just can't get anything to work!!! Been so grumpy! *sigh*

About the Painting
Took hours longer than the other paintings in the series, but you can't tell by looking. The extra effort doesn't really show in my opinion... but it's done! lol... I do love the expression, and I painted him specifically to go next to the Kandu painting.

Very special thanks to Emilie Giguere for allowing me to reference one of her wonderful photos! Without which I never could have painted Hudson. If you haven't seen her photos on flickr, go check 'em out! She's very talented!

A Brief Word about this Series
This series of paintings is very special to me. I've made it my goal to demonstrate the fact that there is no such thing as a "generic orca", any more than there is a "generic human". They each have individual facial features, expressions, behaviours, and above all else, personalities that make them unique and beautiful. These are portraits, in that they attempt to capture a very specific individual to the best of my ability.

You can find my orca tutorial here:

And again, you were so perfectly able to capture all of the small details, spots, expressions and behaviours which make every orca unique. The amount of effort you put into these paintings really is showing off, and it's great to (even now, and yes, eve you) improving when drawing these magnifiscent creatures. The Athena painting though is still one of my favourites because she really has movement in the picture, it's like she just came swimming up to you. Nevertheless, this painting is also rocking my socks of

Hudson! This is fantastic Aelia, as always. I especially like the detailing in the muscles of the tongue and the back of the front. The top jaw teeth look very, very well done. I still love how you transition between the black and white marks of him, and his eye is lovely. As Dave pointed out, the ripples in the water are awesome!

Yet another gorgeous painting by you. I especially like the eyes on him.

I think you're doing great at trying to capture their individual personality.

Of course. You've got an amazing talent when it comes to adding personality to your paintings.

I hope you don;t mind, but you even inspired me to change my avatar into something similar to what yours does. It's an ingenious idea to show a little of some of your works.

Awesome work, Aelia. Your stuff is always so perfect. I've noticed some improvements with this one too. The blur of the water over the black/white of the orca is AWESOME plus the subtle lines of water movement as well.
