Description Story: So the jewelers guild that my girlfriend and i belong too, have a few jewelry cases at the largest rock and gem show in Canada. They were asking the members to make some sort of pin or broach, so i decided to go the opposite rout of everyone else in the group and make myself a cloakpin. As one of the ladies in the group pointed out it works amazingly well as a hair tie.

Center Pin: Square bar aluminum stock

Process:
1-cut proper length of stock

How do you find the aluminum for working compared to other metals like silver or copper? I've never worked with it before and I'm curious. Absolutely fantastic piercing work also!

Aluminum is my favorite metal to work with. I am a little biased as my first industrial jobs were making aluminum railings and aircraft, so they were eye openers too what an interesting metal it is, ESPECIALLY since most people are afraid to work with it.

Pro's: Relative to silver or copper, it is CHEEP. It doesn't really corrode, unless you rubb steel on it. it is a strong metal. light weight, so you can make things way thicker for ascetics.

Con's: easy to scratch, doesnt hold a mirror finish. dulls blades faster.

while a beautifull piece, i hope you have considered "brittle" hair.
The inner edges seem quite sharp (even if nicely rounded due to the small thickness)

I am afraid this piece should have been somewhat thicker to be usuable for every day use. (I guess putting it in practice will tell)
Otherwise beautifully crafted propably took you a long long time to make

Rohvannyn [2013-06-15 00:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Nice effects. Looks about as good as silver. Doesn't the aluminum gum up a bit in the saw?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChardwolfArmory In reply to Rohvannyn [2013-06-15 07:03:06 +0000 UTC]

if you use a harder aluminum it doesn't gum up the blade, but they still tend to dull allot faster then any other metal

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rohvannyn In reply to ChardwolfArmory [2013-06-15 07:06:39 +0000 UTC]

True enough. Except for the time I was asked to saw through tool steel with a jeweler's saw to make a die...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChardwolfArmory In reply to Rohvannyn [2013-06-15 07:12:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah i would imagine that would dull it faster, i just assumed with a high carbon steel you wouldn't be able to saw through with a jewelers saw

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rohvannyn In reply to ChardwolfArmory [2013-06-15 07:18:41 +0000 UTC]

We did, slowly, and had to hold the blade at a precise angle so it would create a cutting edge. I finally got the darn thing done after quite a few hours and about 12 broken blades.

Hmm will have to try that. I'm sure the extra difficulty helps with other materials
