I think this concept could work in a regular Zelda setting. Ganon's henchman try to create a replica of Link, in hopes of creating a warrior strong enough to stand up to him.

I would put

It's not just a "dark version"; there is really a "Dark Link" in the franchise who really has a pretty large fan base and demand for his appearance and/or role to be portrayed more in games. He appears in Ocarina of Time in the Water Temple to fight Link and since then is considered to be as some say "Link's only true rival" considering who and what Dark Link is.
