So…fun fact: Stracion almost got cut from LC twice.

In the previous version, Stracion was one of several characters whose only purpose was to get Jade out of trouble when I got her into situations I couldn’t get her out of. Obviously, that was unacceptable for the new version, so in the early stages of Revision 11, I actually considered cutting Stracion outright. I was like 90% certain of my decision too. But just to be sure, I sat down to draft a scene with her.

And oh god she was a troll and I loved every second of it she definitely had to stay.

Okay, so she was staying. But there was no way I could keep the bit where she basically set up Jade’s entire escape for her–that had to go. Except…now I had basically removed any real purpose for her. She had no reason to be there. So… she was going? But when I read the outlines of the experiment arc without her…it just felt empty.

So I let her help Jade, but made her deliberately unhelpful and bare-minimum about it. This way, I still got to have her antics without taking away any tension and agency from Jade’s mission. And her appearance also serves another purpose–I get to establish the fact that there are non-rebel Rockets who are unsatisfied with the direction the team’s going in, which in an early hint that the two sides in the conflict aren’t as distinct as they appear to be.

So she stayed! I suppose I should probably come up with a role for her long-term then. Part 2′s got some negative space for me to work with, so I’m sure I’ll think of something.
