Description If there's anything wild about Rover, besides his over-exuberant personality, it's his hair.  It does what it wants and no amount of combing or gel will keep it in place for long.

Can you imagine how crazy Rover's hair would've been if he were into rock 'n' roll instead of country?

I have to wonder how Rover would have ended up as an adult if he had managed to stay with his family.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 17:23:04 +0000 UTC]

It would be an interesting AU to explore someday.  What would have happened if their ship had never been attacked and they had gained some knowledge of their surroundings before any real adventure hit.  Rover has always been a bit of a rebel and he has always liked watching westerns with his dad.  But he certainly wouldn't be the over-the-top, cowboy-obsessed guy we see now.  And with his parents guidance he wouldn't be as reckless either.  Though he would likely still be the first to explore something that could be dangerous.  He might not, however, end up being the protective one, as he is now.  His older brother and father would have taken on that role.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 17:28:28 +0000 UTC]

It'd be an interesting version.
Or what about if, for some reason, Rover wasn't on the Rover. What if he'd begged to stay with Travis on the Gypsy and his parents let him?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 17:42:58 +0000 UTC]

Oooh.  That is an interesting thought as well.  Travis wouldn't be such an obsessed psycho, as he would have to fill his dad's shoes and take care of his little brother.  And I imagine he would become annoyingly over protective.  I think Rover would want to join the Vigilance.  Not so much for revenge, but because he still had hope that there were survivors that they could find.  He would reason just because they were attacked didn't mean everyone was dead.  Travis would forbid it, but as a grown man he gonna do what he wants.  And Travis may follow just to keep his brother safe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 17:51:33 +0000 UTC]

I imagine if Travis had Rover, he wouldn't be captain, maybe high ranking, but not captain. I could see Rover really chafing with a protective older brother and taking risks just to prove he's his own person.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 17:58:12 +0000 UTC]

I agree with both.  Travis wouldn't be as committed to the idea of going in space, so he wouldn't cliimb the ranks as intently.  However, he is very efficient and dedicated, so they would see his potential.  And yeah.  Rover will always be a bit of a wild one.  And while he would love his older brother he would have a bit of the "you're not my dad.  You can't tell me what to do." mentality.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 18:01:32 +0000 UTC]

It could be utter insanity on the ship. I'm imagining Rover either trying to hook up with Jenny or get her with another guy like Jake or Kyle, and meanwhile teasing Travis about Nova. I imagine Travis would still be out for revenge because of what happened to his parents, but he'd have another goal.
Man, what if Rover rescued Flyspur from the lab?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 18:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.  Both guys would probably be more open to relationships to some degree.  Travis would also be a lot less damaged and would be at least a little more willing to make actual friends, though he'd still be kind of stuffy and single minded.  About their parents fate Rover would be quite optimistic, saying that, yeah, they found debris from the ship but only some bodies.  Space preserves everything so because they didn't find them they MUST still be alive.  While Travis sees the destroyed ship and char marks on it and realizes that some things could have been completely incinirated in an explosion....and...as their training has suggested, some aliens might be carnivorous.

Wow!  Now THAT is a thought!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 18:18:59 +0000 UTC]

Rover would probably be trying to get Travis to loosen up. Another thing is that Travis would basically have had to become a dad suddenly, so he'd have lost his childhood, while Rover still would have got to be a kid.

And then Rover escapes with him and Travis decides it's a kidnapping.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 18:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Yep.  He would be pretty stuffy most of the time.  But I bet he could be persuaded into some fun now and then.  And Rover would likely not go by his middle name either.  He'd be Andrew.

OH!  That would be horrible.  Travis would be horrified.  And you know when it hit Rover what all was going on he would do something about it.  They all kind of know what the aliens are for.  And they would have been kept from any communication as much as possible.  The only ones who would know the most would be Maria and the Captain.  UNLESS one of the men managed to tap into some alien communications.  And they saw everyday life, news casts and personal calls.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 18:28:54 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that'd be different. I imagine Travis might use his middle name. "Andrew Rover Finnigan! I know you made this mess. Now fix it!"

Hmm. I imagine Rover, being curious, might do something like that, tinkering and getting the news casts.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 18:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, for sure.  There would be a lot of that, I have NO doubt!

Yep.  I imigine him bringing contraban along with him as well:  Some sort of pocket distillery or something, another one of his rebellios steaks.  He'd probably be the one to sneak a little 'animal' alien on the ship as well.  He'd be like "This isn't going to take over Earth.  It's a kitten bug!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 18:50:27 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. What if the majority of the creatures he rescued were his crew?

Or it's an electric possum with a duck bill.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 18:56:09 +0000 UTC]

That would interesting!

I bet he would only end up in the lab because of a dare or something.  It wouldn't be somewhere most of the crew were allowed.

Most anything he brought onto the ship would have to fit in a pocket or something, as he would always be on planet with several other people and not allowed to stray too far from them.  So the biggest hiding place he would likely have is in a bomber-like jacket.  But a baby liske would totally fit!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 18:57:28 +0000 UTC]

If Rover wasn't allowed somewhere, he'd figure out  WHY.

Yep. A baby Trigger. Maybe it was orphaned, or they grabbed the adult for the lab.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah.  Totally.  He'd be the kind to go somewhere JUST because he was told not to.   He might have been able to hide this tendancy during his training because he wanted to be on the mission so bad.  But once he was out in space and there was no going back he'd slip back into his old ways.

That would be possible.  While they know the 'animal' species aren't likely to invade earth, they are still useful for learing about the intelligent species that are there.  I could see them taking an adult and him finding the baby nearby and unable to leave it or tell anyone, knowing it would just go to the lab too.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 19:07:25 +0000 UTC]

Especially when space is mostly boring. I could even imagine Rover, on some mission, spotting some alien kids playing and not being able to pull the trigger, then leading the group off in another direction.

Or someone seeing the baby and being like, "Oh, we have the adult. Just leave it."

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:14:38 +0000 UTC]

He very well could.  They have been trained to do their best to stay out of densely populated areas for that reason.  They don't want the soldiers accumulating sympathy.  They don't want them to see the aliens interracting.  Se one alone and shoot it.  That's their job.  But there would certainly be times he could end up witnessing something like that.  And honestly as much training and anti-alien propaganda they have been filled with...Rover doesn't exactly pay attention to studies.  So he is likely to have less of that extreme prejudice as the others as well.  Honestly I bet he would get along great with TJ.

Yeah.  They would likely not even bother with it.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 19:17:23 +0000 UTC]

I bet those two would get into a lot of trouble. Imagine the pranks. Jenny might get to be a target for those. Jamal would probably get dragged in  too. I imagine Kyle finding them and being like, "Don't tell Travis."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:21:08 +0000 UTC]

I could actually see Rover dragging travis into some things without his consent.  like "we got to hide this thing!  Um...TRAVIS's room!"  And not being captain, and his protectiveness of his brother might have him frantically trying to keep something hidden, while trying to steer his brother back into proper behavior.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 19:22:56 +0000 UTC]

Like, "They always inspect our room for some reason. They'd never think to look in Travis's room."
You could do a whole comic series on HHH AU stuff.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:29:44 +0000 UTC]

Of course.  Because Travis always follows the rules.

LOL!  Yep.  it would be fun.  I'd at least like to do a picture of both of them. Rover would be a lot thinner.  In a military outfit like that he would have to stay in shape, and his hair would likely be shorter as well, and of course he wouldn't have his iconic hat.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 19:34:10 +0000 UTC]

True, unless somehow, Tom had a feeling and let him wear the hat while they were separated since it would've been the first time Rover was away from his parents.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:36:59 +0000 UTC]

That's not impossible.  And maybe even that "Take care of it.  I'll get it back later."  is part of what motivates him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2019-10-18 19:37:50 +0000 UTC]

It could be. I imagine maybe in this universe, Travis was on the second ship, and Tom had some feeling that something wasn't right, so he decided to let Rover go with Travis and gave him the hat.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2019-10-18 19:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Possible.  Or just knowing that this was completely new and new things can be dangerous.  Knowing they would go first and their children would be coming through only after it was announced safe would have been a comfort.  And letting the boys think it was because he was allowing them to be all independant.
