Description

'Deep is the abyss that is spanned by Durin's Bridge, and none has measured it,' said Gimli.

'Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge,' said Gandalf. 'Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.'

-

I, ALWAYS, have loved this description, and the production designs based on it for the LOTR films, it's a pity that the slime Balrog didn't make it into the movies, but I understand why. The concept that this thing of fire and shadow has condensed, and become concentrated, into tar, and still just as evil as before, has always appealed to me.

Impressive! I like how you made the balrog look skeletal when his fire is extinguished; so creepy!

WOW! I don't think I've ever seen that scene illustrated, and I can't imagine anyone else doing it this well.

Having grown up with more fear of darkness and constriction than of fire, I always found this scene powerfully disturbing, and you've made it very real here.

Thanks! I'm happy that it has spoken to you so much!

Thanks for including the description! Maybe the only thing more frightening that a bottomless abyss is the actual bottom of one, "beyond light and knowledge". I can't get over that wing, this murky lattice of cartilage.

It's once again that fear of the unknown/the dark/unseen that is scary, and then to still have that when you find the bottom is scarier still

Awesome illustration! Everyone always draws Gandalf vs. balrog on the bridge, but I've never seen a depiction of this scene before.

I'm seeing a change in your colour choice. I'm liking it. This and the last one felt more alive and less flat. Congrats!

I'm trying to be more deliberate about going with monochromatic whenever possible, and then only adding details with more colour when I need it

Oh I see! Kindof like a monochromatic photo with a single item in full colour. But more subtle. Just as eyecatchingΒ
