This is amazing. And he is my favorite Holmes as well...followed closely by Cumberbatch.

Yeah Brett is the best "classic" Holmes, but I really like the modern BBC adaption, too. Cumberbatch does a really nice job!

His research of the original character, ignoring the previous actors who portrayed Holmes on stage and screen, makes for deeper and more textured role. He really set the bar high!

Yeah. Once he claimed that he hated holmes, but he was so dedicated, i don't believe it for a moment!

Have you seen the new Sherlock by BBC?
It's by far the best Sherlock TV/Movie I've seen other than the classic Jeremy Brett one. It's set in modern day London, the character and plot is roughly based on the original stories. The cast is really really good, with Benedick Cumberbatch as an intense Sherlock. Most of all, there's so many delicious ester eggs in this TV show that directed at the original stories, which makes it so much fun to watch.
I'd strongly suggest you check it out.

I always thought Sherlock was not that good really. His sense of justice was somewhat twisted, because he believe his judgement is above the law. He's more than happy to play judge and play with other people's life. He probably have some evil adventures that the good doctor knew nothing about.

Probably. I don't think he's capable of love or other emotion. The book did mention he cares about Watson, but those moments are rare and far between, and most likely the wishful thinking of our good doctor.

I think you're right (though my sister, who reads into everything like a /slash novel thinks there's more, lol) Doyal was a spiritualist and it's possible he writes in a little veiled critique of the "cold rationalist" as some one with great powers of observation but cut of from human emotions. Either that or he's totally gay-bones for Watson, lol

I secretly hope there's yaoi tension between Sherlock and Watson, or Sherlock and Moriarty. But I can never allow myself to do anything with it. I think Doyle wrote Sherlock based on a real person, this person might not be as brilliant as Sherlock in the book, his method might not work every time, but I do believe you can't make something like Sherlock up. He's so vivid and consistent in personality, it has to be based on reality.
After all, Doyle is not a good writer. His other works are not nearly as good. Even the Sherlock stories are rather simple and blank. It is the character that really stands out. Very few people nowadays read Sherlock Holmes because of it's story, there're way better detective fictions out there. It is the characters that make the work eternal. And these kind of character almost always based on reality.
There're speculations that Sherlock is based on Doyle's medical school professor Dr. Bell. Don't know how much of it is true though.

Yeah, I know a ton of Sherlock fans, but no Doyle fans...hmm. I think you're right, there's almost no way for a writer of such limited imagination to create a character of such great depth without a model. It's like Robert Louis Stevenson, there would be no Dr. Jykll without Dr. Knox and no Long John Silver without William Henley. Great art seems to come from shared experience, drawing on experiences and reference points from life.
And on the yaoi point, there might not be an explicit romance between Watson and Sherlock, but Doyle was definitely in love with Homes (and the first person perspective is Watson's voice, lol)

Well, if you read into the words of the original stories, you'd notice Sherlock never approved Watson's marriage. He even went so far as to say "Watson abandoned me for a wife". I feel that the dynamic between Watson and Holmes is not friendship, but more like a very dominating master and a good natured servent (the original side kick...LOL). While Doyle might be in love with Holmes at the beginning it certain didn't last long. He hated Holmes to the point that he couldn't wait to kill him off in one very badly written story.
Doyle never consider Sherlock Holmes his great masterpiece, he started writing Holmes because his doctor business doesn't pay much and he needed extra cash. He always consider himself a "serious historical writer" or something on that line. He kill Sherlock off so he can be more focused on his "historical stories" (which wasn't any good at all). And because the overwhelming readers request, he has to write Sherlock back to live in one equally bad written story.
Poor Doyle... I think the guy who inspired Sherlock was probably dead or left Doyle's circle all of sudden, that's probably half the reason Doyle has to kill him off.
LOL don't get me started on Sherlock. He used to be my role model during college years. I wanted to be just like him, cold always in control of himself and his surroundings. It's not until later I realized he is probably either depressed, or sociopath.

Wow, you really know Sherlock! The story of the books are almost as interesting as the stories themselves. I'm ashamed to say but most of my information about Doyle comes from a Houdini biography, lol. But I should read a proper one. Any recommendations?
