Description This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be there

Anyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)

My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

I bet that big gas giant would cause nasty tides. So big in the sky. Tidal friction would probably rip the surfaces to pieces. :/ Only aquatic life around.

Indeed it would. Here i imagined the water might be shallow and limited to lakes rather than global-scale seas, so who knows - that might result in weaker tides than one might think

I suppose I could make a print available of it. Not sure how big it would be as it's an older work which generally aren't as high resolution as my newer stuff

I know the feeling this picture should have made first place but the judges were probably looking for people in the render and their imagination is only to A small plane of reality so DO NOT LET THEMΒ  GET TO YOU I mean look at my page just like you I pushed bryce 7 pro and 6 to its material limits. So if you have chance check out my page I can always use your critiques.

Now that it's long-passed I'm over it. Especially when I realized that they like to promote realism above all (since that's what they market themselves as being able to do) and the winners, while pretty boring subject-wise, were at least realistic I guess. Still, there is definitely a neglect for those in the sci-fi galleries :

OK, I'll critique 'cause I'm feeling generous

It is Their loss. It seems that Substance is losing ground more each day, everyone is going for that instant flash and wow. ItsΒ over so fast and no one really thinks at what they are looking at. Sad to say the least.

Chromattix In reply to 8legs [2013-08-21 01:00:38 +0000 UTC]

I guess technical mastery was their main criteria, since they're a software company after all and they want to promote how realistic their products can render an image (fooling newcomers into believing they can create photo-real images the same week they get it...they're in for a surprise ) But still, while the winners were technically great, subject-wise they were pretty ordinary

8legs In reply to Chromattix [2013-08-21 01:49:44 +0000 UTC]

As far as I'm concerned you Did master it, what more could they want? I just don't see their criteria being viable, you did the work and it came out as it should have.

This looks amazing. Were you inspired by Titan (Saturn's largest moon) when making this? The dense atmosphere, flooded surface, and Saturn in the background make me think of Titan.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to ToxicWyvern [2012-12-09 03:05:02 +0000 UTC]

Not in this case. Sometimes my planets are inspired by ones in our Solar System, but I think this one is a too far stretch from Titan (looks too warm and sunny) plus Titan is more orange in colour I would imagine

Who knows - in the distant future when the sun becomes a red giant it might warm Titan up enough for such a scenario to exist. As long as it still has all that atmosphere

Probably. They were inspired by anemones So they would either sting or just use them as food-catchers

Give Titan a few billion years to warm up thanks to an expanding sun and maybe something will become of that - it has the most earthlike conditions in the Solar System and inddeed orbits around Saturn...only its unbelievably cold weather stops it from being inhabitable

Take a look at the trailer for the newest one, square enix gets the budget needed to hire artists like you to produce a world like that. Something that comes alive with life and color is what makes us all go wow. I'm happy because it's a machine capable of displaying the color and talent of truly spectacular artists.

Rpgs are about the story though, and working your way through it. I dunno, I've always liked a bit of story and depth to my games.

The 'alien plants' were made in Cinema4D?! Excellent job man, I've used Cinema4D in the past for some simple modeling, but these are brilliant. I love the natural look to this as well, and really stunned that this didn't even make the finals of this VUE contest, at least you know yourself it should have been in there. Another fantastic piece of art, and 50+ hours well spent I'd say.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to FlippinPhil [2009-08-30 11:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, some of them were Cinema 4D...just the largest ones made up of those segmented parts-excluding the purple tentacles sitting atop them - the rest is clever use of Vue's underused Plant editor But true that I'm no pro at general modelling either, I couldn't model and texture say - a realistic car or person (which are some of the most common things in 3D art here) Usually I model basic plants or buildings etc to assist in the realism of my landscapes

Yeah, still bummed it at least didn't make it to the finals...it practically made use of every one of Vue's assets which would have made this a good marketing image on their behalf
