Description
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In their "pretty clothes" (okay, the costumer in me wanted to draw them in something other than chaps and beat-up leather). Guil looks like he was posing for a formal Renaissance portrait when Ros slipped in behind him...
This was inspired by what I consider to be the most beautiful color image in the play, a Guil quote from p. 94 (end of Act II):"GUIL: Autumnal—nothing to do with leaves. It is to do with a certain brownness at the edges of the day….Brown is creeping up on us, take my word for it….Russets and tangerine shades of old gold flushing the very outside edge of the senses….deep shining ochres, burnt umber and parchments of baked earth—reflecting on itself and through itself, filtering the light. At such times, perhaps, coincidentally, the leaves might fall, somewhere, by repute. Yesterday was blue, like smoke."
Done in Prismacolor pencils, with black ink and white gouache.

This is indelibly gorgeous. "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is one of my deepest favorites of any drama, and this is almost perfectly how I imagined them. Furthermore, the art is distinctly beautiful.

*paws at picture, trying to claw it off the monitor* Daaaaarn yooooou... *covet covet covet* Although I'm not nearly as up on my Renaissance Art as I should be, it's always been my favorite artistic style. (Impressionism? Pfah! Gimme my Da Vinci and statuesque beauties!) The wrinkles in the sheet or whatever it is Guildenstern's sitting on is pure Rennaisance, and that you've pulled it off so beautifully, along with all the nitpicky little details in the textures of their clothing and the sofa arm, that I am seriously considering favving this, and I've favved maybe thirty things in my two-plus years here. You have paid delightful homage to one of the best absurdist plays of all time! (Though my favorite part still has to be their game of 'Questions,' despite its general lack of strict literary merit.) Man, this is just frickin' good all around!
