I'd recommend not using your fingers too much to smudge the graphite.
Try seeing the small details first and capture them, rather than try to get the overall look finished as soon as possible.
Have patience; work on it step by step - good drawings usually take several days, if not weeks.
And if you're drawing with normal pencils and want to get better: buy new ones.

My pencils which I use, are technical pencils drawings and it is new. In art, one is free with or without the fingers. The goal, it is to make research. With patience, this drawings which I finished in 1 hours 30 minutes. I take my time with pleasure. To finish quickly, it is not sure to have a perfect drawing. It does not matter, if there are tasks on my self-portrait. It was a research to improve me my techniques drawings. And I am proud.
