Description Considering the numerous warships in the Battletech world, the rare if ever thing that is not shown is a decent heavy space battle.

So I whipped this up.

One of House Liao's worlds is under attack - however they have no idea the scale of the enemy and despite what they see, the Capellans go in by sending loads of Thrushes, Transits, and Ahabs as well as a few warships and small vessels of their own.

The invading Warships are a Lola 3 Class Destroyer, an Aegis Class Heavy Cruiser, a Sovetskii Soyuz Class Heavy Cruiser, and that big beast is a Mckenna Class Battleship. All these ships are throwing Barracuda, Kracken, and Killer Whale missiles with the back up firepower of Naval lasers and cannons.

Surrounding them are loads of dropships and more fighters than you would see in Star Wars!

This was just an experiment to see how I could do a space battle scene with lots involved; blasts, debris, blur effects, glares, and such.

Enjoy!

I got this from a story that I think was a prelude to the Word of Blake Jihad.

I think an 'undisclosed invader' attacked a Capellan world.

And as you put it, they were royally screwed....

Remember when I said SLDF ships were not well designed? Well most SLDF ships, like those pictured here, had very poor anti-aerofighter defenses so the Capellans will potentially be able to do serious damage with swarm tactics, but yeah this is gonna get ugly. Not that I really give to figs for the Cappellans aka space North Korea.

Whenever I go trolling for Battletech stuff, I always pay a little visit to this glorious piece. The shadowing of the warships, especially the McKenna's massive bulk dominating the battlespace is just wonderful. Makes me wish we could have the sheer intensity and awe of Star Wars dogfights combine with the hard-ish science and brutal slugging of an Inner Sphere conflict.

Bravo Colourbrand.

Oh wow, I can't tell you how much I love this pic!

When I was a l'il girl, I was walking around a car boot sale with my dad. I saw a book on a table with space ships on it and I whined and whined until he bought it for me. I didn't really know what it was all about, but I must've read that guide cover to cover a hundred times by the time I turned 10 years old.

As much as I love the action and drama, I love the throwback to my youth (because I'm an old lady now ) even more than that.

Thank you for popping by and sharing such a sweet memory

This must be during the first, possibly second, succession war when the inner sphere powers still had warships. Most left with the star league army, and returned with the clans!

Actually its on the start on the Word of Blake Jihad.

The ships are post clan designs.

Cheers for looking

I've always been a huge fan of the McKenna, you've done a very good job here of bringing across the oh-shit sinking feeling in Battletech when the other guy has one and you don't. Lovely work.

Its a pleasure - and thanks for faving it too

LadySiri In reply to Colourbrand [2014-05-30 04:08:45 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure. I have the 3057 book with all the warships in it, and while its illustrations are Β fine and dandy, they don't give any sense of scale. This, though... this drives home just how bloody massive the McKenna is compared to other ships in the setting. The Aegis and the SS appear to be undersized (so they must be beyond the McKenna some ways) but the Lola 3 is just about right as a direct comparison.

I know at its heart Battletech is about giant robots, but it definitely needs more space battles (and more art of space battles).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to LadySiri [2014-05-31 14:11:22 +0000 UTC]

Well to be honest, I got these from another artist who sort of "dictated" the size of these ships; then again I am not surprised that BT does not depict size - too obsessed with WOW than substance - which is a great shame. BT has so much to offer but prefers to be ignorant.

Watch this space my friend, there will be more be it BT or other

Thank you again for your kind words

For an experiment, I think it turned out rather well!
I'm really liking all the detail here, but make sure to prevent it from becoming cluttered.

The light source and horizon, however, offset this really well, drawing the eye around
the pic as an entirety.

That's all the criticism I can offer. Otherwise, you've come a long way with this.
Cheers!

Cheers! No no, be always honest! After all, the spectator sees more than the player. I like the factor about the sun, and yer right! Its does make you look around subconciously. That is an excellent point and one I am taking with me!

Yes, clutter is my crime, one I am trying to fix.

Thank you very much for this important feedback!

This looks great Chris. There's so much action in it. Kind of reminds me of the Alliance's attack on the second Death Star. I'd hate to be the Kong-jiang-jun in charge of coordinating the attack.

I also love the complete neglect at the details of who the invader is in your description though speaking as a guy who knows who's likely to invade the CC, the actual ships do kind of give it away if you remove the the assumption of captured vessels from the equation and factor in who'd have the resources to unleash such a large fleet on a single world. I'll say nothing more.

There's a lot of lovely details in it despite the limited array of weapons being fired, but I do wonder where the NGauss and NPPCs are especially as the McKenna mounts a dozen HNPPCs on each broadside. Silly little gripe I know but that's just me.

Hey AMIGO!!!

Thank you sir! Its a piece I just droned into and it worked - less is more and it worked well here. You know enough and the rest is in the mind.

I left that to the imagination - sometimes I think its ideal to let people think what is what and so forth. I hate telling it "by the numbers".

Oh and I go with your theory

I was going to add more weapons but I felt that could have decended into buffoonery, a case of "the mother of all wars just went up to 11" and then it would look comical.

I was tempted....

Always a joy sir!!!

Oh and I go with your theory
Cool, the thought of the invaders is making me hungry, I'll just go pop a couple of slices in.

You're very right too much fire would detract from the overall feel, and make it comical. I just get the sense the big guns are lacking, lasers are all well and good but their range is limited. Still there's enough Cap torpedoes there to make up for the lack of them.

fantastic work though once again. You're a true master I wish I had half the skill with art you do.
