Description One of my many face studies. People seem to like this one, so I thought I would put it up here. I do lots of quick studies hoping they'll rub off on my finished stuff.
If you're curious about my process, you can see a timelapse of a very similar painting of mine HERE

3 hours for the drawing + value painting. I coloured it with some filters because yolo.

Great portrait. I like the contrasts and combination of sharp and blurred areas.

Wow!!! This one looks great! What id you do to get the wispy looks at the ends of her hair? Also were these custom brushes or just the standard ones in photoshop?
She looks so real!

So today I made a video and it might clear up the process for you. Here you go: youtu.be/r0ITV8nrPyc

Thanks, glad you like it! I'm not sure specifically what I did, haha. Since it was a pretty quick study, my process was a bit of a blur. I think I started with a custom oval sketch brush for the general forms, then went to a tapered, sharp brush for the individual strokes you see. After that I used some blur and selective smudging here and there to get rid of messiness and give it smooth, blending values. Sorry I can't really help more than that, haha.

I feel terrible for not knowing, but is that Emma Watson (and I think it is) or Hayden Panettiere?

Awesome work, of course

Haha, thanks. It's Hayden. I've never seen a movie with her in it, but her face and attitude is absolutely perfect for one of the character pieces I'm working on, so I figured a study couldn't hurt!

Yeah, I caught this on Facebook right after I asked, hah. Looks very much like her too, great work. Monochrome is one of my favorite things to work in cause I actually feel you can make better forms on shapes and it forces you to only put down the pieces of a subject that are absolutely characteristic.

Anyways, if you decide to watch anything with her in it Heroes is quintessential. The 1st-2nd season in particular... things got a little wierd after that.

Monochrome is where I started (pencil renderings) and I used to be literally afraid of colour. Even though I'm no longer afraid, value studies are still my comfort zone. Though, as I learn about lighting strategies, I get more and more kicks out of how easy it can be to define forms and planes by using different-coloured light sources. Really, it works like a charm. Haha.

I should try progressing that way, cause you just summed me up in a few sentences. I was terrified (impatient really) of coloring digitally but as soon as I got into it it was easy. Mastery of it is another thing though, and that's where I should start experimenting with value and form in monochrome.
