Thank you! It can be really interesting just taking a blacklight to things, you never know what might react in a cool way!

Hey, I really love this. I'm interested in black light paintings myself, and I've never seen anything quite like your painting. Could you share some information about your technique? What kind of paints did you use?

Thank you!
Everything I've done with UV paint has just been trial and error, so I'm not a very official source, but I'll tell you some of the things I've found out through experimenting. For one, how I did this particular piece is I painted it "normally" first, with regular acrylic paints, although I made the colors nice and bright. Afterwards, I turned off the lights and went back with flourescent paint both pure and mixed with regular paints and redid everything in thin layers, using a black light as my only source of light in the room. Then I went back a third time in normal lighting and touched up anything the blacklight layer might have thrown off.

The paints I got at Michaels, and are a cheap, generic brand of acrylic paints that come in little bottles. They were in the crafts section, not the art section. Look for paint labeled fluorescent or phosphorescent: fluorescent will react under blacklight and phosphorescent with react strongly under blacklight as well as glow in the dark. Anything labelled "fluorescent" and even some not labeled as such will react with UV light. Stalking the selection at Michaels and Hobby Lobby I've been able to get lime green, pink, orange and yellow phosphorescent and green, blue, pink, orange, yellow, and purple (rarely) in fluorescent. You might have to hunt a bit to get all the colors, though! I'm sure it would be easiest to order it online. There's also more expensive paints specifically for blacklight painting available online, but for this painting I used 100% cheap stuff.

One last bit of advice: don't be afraid to mix blacklight paint with regular paint, just be sure to check how it reacts afterwards. Normal paint will overpower the blacklight paint very quickly, but if you're subtle you can get colors not possible with the limited selection you might have. Also, when painting under blacklight only, it's actually possible to mix white paint! Just mix all the colors together, with a little extra blue. It's how I did the teeth on this, they actually glow white under UV white and it was done mixing the colors I listed above. Finally, be gentle with how much UV paint you use. Assuming the painting will be close to a UV lightvsource, you can thin the paint until it's mostly invisible in regular lighting and still get a strong effect under blacklight.
I hope some of this helps you, and good luck! Blacklight painting is extremely fun.

Thanks for being so detailed! I go to Michael's all the time and I found pink, orange, green and yellow - but alas, no purple or blue. However, maybe I was looking in the wrong place - I'll check again, thanks to you! And thanks for all those tips - I shall definitely try mixing.

Omg, this is awesome, blacklight is my favorite. I wish I could put "The Enchanted Threshold" under the blacklight.

Thank you! The paint I used was just cheap stuff from Michaels (most craft stores have it) if you ever want to give it a try.

I'm a straight-up sucker for black-light stuff, but anytime a painting can look that brilliant and detailed whether it's under the black-light or not, that shows an incredible amount of skill.
