I would have at least given it something a bit more, only because of the fact that they made an episode where Spike caused a problem and fixed it....himself!

While i agree that their was a pacing issue with this episode as moments dragged on too long. I did feel it was overall funny despite seeing something similar. I give it a B instead of a C+

Now I remember why I usually avoid reading other people's long in-depth reviews that are about just anything that I in general like.Β Makes me too self conscious that my opinion (on aspects I disagree with each reviewer on) might be "wrong" or "unreasonable" so to speak.
Also, school has to taught me to disdain letter grades.Β Heh

I think giving it a C+ is way too low. I thought writing was pretty good and actually have no problem with it. Now, I'm not sure if I have a problem with the plot yet, because I'm still digesting the episode even if a day have passed already.
Why?
Because I think Rarity's curse had gone a little too far. It wasn't her curse but the way it was shown. I was really terrified and creeped out by her and I know not everyone would perceive it that way, but still I think the 'darkness' of the episode was just a bit too much. I would call this a Spike episode actually because the moral was towards him alone. Rarity was possesed and she had no clue what she did done to Ponyville however I must say she did a brilliant job as a villain, I actually never felt that way since Chrysalis.
It's a shame you focused your review and score towards Sparity that more important stuff, like the moral, which is VERY GOOD, and actually a moral that a lot of people can relate to. Honesty is not new in the show since we have Applejack, but honesty also have many forms and this is one of them. I felt the resolution a little quick but makes sense since the spell would be broken if Spike told her the truth.
Also I would have like to see if Twilight found out that Rarity was behind everything, those are my complains which are very minor.
I would give it a B+ at least

I find it so interesting how you and this guy often have opposing viewpoints:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Laa5nβ¦
As for me, I personally found the episode a bit jarring as, yeah, this story line felt like it had too little going for it for a 22-minute episode.

Hey, long time no see, huh?
Anyways, back to the episode, maybe I'd give it a B-, I feel Rarity's situation as a whole came out pretty well, specially compared to other episodes, but as you said, Spike being just a kiss-ass all episode with little to no input at the end really made the episode feel weak as a whole.
I've been reading your reviews all season long, I agree with most, some I enjoyed more, some less, but either way, keep up the good work!

Mm, yeah, C+ is a fair score for it. It really is one of those episodes that is some people's cup of tea, but not others. And I have to admit that you're right; writing-wise, it doesn't achieve all that much, does it? Though, in a way, I thought it was kind of fitting for the episode's plot, but obviously that's just me and I'm okay with that.
As for why Rarity could keep doing spells after Spike took the book, I have two theories on that. One was that the spell was never tied to the book that closely in the first place, and the spell was transferred directly to Rarity either the moment she cast the spell, or over the course of time as she continued to use it. The instruction to keep the book close could have many reasons for being. One obvious one is that it was simply a safeguard from the inventor, knowing it was dark magic, which is frowned upon in Equestria even back in it's day of origin, and could get ponies in trouble should someone other than the user found it. Basically it was a lyrical way of saying "keep this secret." Either that, or it just helped make for a better rhyme.
The other theory is one of proximity. Spike may have taken the book from Rarity, but in reality, he didn't take it far, just from his hands and into his stomach. Since he continued to hang around Rarity's general area afterwards, it's possible that was still close enough for Rarity to use the spell without much trouble. But if so, then at least a clue towards this would've helped clear the confusion...though that might be hard given it's location and still be keeping to the show's kids rating.
Better questions: what happens to the book in the end, and the spell that was cast out of Rarity? The book is just out of morbid curiosity, but the spell, it should be noted, didn't go back to the book but away altogether, and is presumably still active somewhere. So...where'd it go?
Anyway, I liked the episode, but yeah, when you really think about it, it was pretty C-average.

Just Rarity became a fashion dictator and did things without thinking of anyone but herself, and it made me hate her alittle.. I mean, if she let her id (as you know, the part of the brain that is all pleasure and no guilt) she'd enforce everyone to live by her standards and obey only her.
I just... I got really mad at the episode... But yeah. Rarity got demoted fromΒ tied with DashieΒ for my fave pony to Twilight Sparkle's level, who is better than Apple Jack who I cannot relate to.
1- Dashie
2- Pinkie Pie
3- Fluttershy
4- Rarity & Twilight
5- Apple Jack

It wasn't really Rarity, though, right? She didn't even remember what had happened when the spell left her, kind of like Trixie except Trixie had at least an idea of what had happened. Nothing Rarity did was with ill-intent, it took her love of creativity and fashion and cranked it up to 11, but the spell got rid of any actual judgement.Β
So, not really Rarity, but a sort of negative caricature that the book brought out.Β

Yeah, Tartarus was pretty much the Greek version of hell/heaven, it's where Cerberus came from in Lesson Zero. Like, there's Elysium, which is heaven but underground and it's for people who led amazing and inspiring lives and such, the Fields of Asphodel which is like a neutral zone for souls that don't really go anywhere for eternity, and Tartarus is waaaay below that pretty much holds all the super bad people and monsters and Cerberus guards to gates to Tartarus.Β

The show really wouldn't be any fun with only rainbows and happiness and no exploration of their dark sides. Rarity actually wasn't only acting for herself, if you really think about it, she thoughtΒ she was acting for other people actually, she just assumed anything she did would be benefitting to the ponies, without actually seeing if it was or not.
Your argument is rendered invalid.
