Description older illustration project i had to do for school. our task was to illustrate an old story (wood-engraving-like) of our choice.

you can guess what i chose.
my favorite villain/anti-hero when i was little.

here's the cover. three other illustrated pages will follow soon.

(the title says "reineke fuchs" - which stays for reynard fox in german. yes, it's old german. i love to read old german.)

The word french word for fox, "renard" (as well as all other variations of this name, like Reineke in German or Reynard in English), has its roots from the Ysengrimus, which is the oldest animal epic where both main characters - the fox and the wolf - are called by these names for the very first time: Ysengrimus and Reynardus. The origins of this epic remain unknown but it is thought to be written by a cleric from Ghent.

In French, the fox was originally called "goupil". But since it was considered bad luck to call the fox directly by its name, it was later replaced by Renard.

Imagine if they made a cartoon movie out of this.

One thing though (I understand German a little), if you read "Reineke Fuchs" from English perspective..."fuchs" looks an awful lot like, well, you know what word. And the character himself does f around the lot.

GREAT picture all the same!

Another interesting fact is the word "vixen" seen from a German perspective, since it is spelled the exact same way as "wichsen" - which is German for jerking off.

Aaaah, Reynard... villain or anti-hero?

Depends on how censored your version of his story is!

Being familiar with the uncensored story I'd say DEFINITELY a villain protagonist. His story was a pretty brutal no-holds barred satire on just about all of medieval society. With a very sadistic sense of humour. Sort of the equivalent of satirical cartoon shows of the time I suppose. Making fun of just about everyone. (Just goes to show that some things aren't as new as people think.)

And uncensored Reynard... oh, definitely a gleeful torturer, murderer, overall sadist, arguably a rapist (And definitely at least an adulterer.) Played for laughs! But he's not a nice fox. Not that there are many nice people in his world, he's just smarter then the other nasties. (And since said other nasties ARE pretty dumb... (Seeing how they're parodies of various types of medieval people. XD)

I'm actually surprised Disney at one point considered doing a movie about him. Although I DO know for a fact Disney liked and grew up with trickster stories. But even so, even the most censored versions of Reynard I've seen don't really have him as a particularly nice fox.

It's more of a difference then between 'cruel trick you wouldn't want little kids to imitate' (Censored) and 'try to kill someone, they get horribly mutilated instead and Reynard smugly/sadistically makes fun of their injuries when they're helpless' (And it gets worse still) (Uncensored.) Again, played for laughs, but Reynard is a bad guy even so. A bad guy brutally (if cleverly/comically) picking on asshole victims to suit his own purposes.

If one thing the Reynard stories show that no holds barred triple R-rated satire with lots of violence and sexual content was around in medieval times too. (Then again it was around in ancient times and probably in the stone age. But not everyone knows that.)

I loved that story. I've read the original poem. But it's not a German story. 'The fox Reynard' was a Dutch epos, and it was most likely written by Willem van Boudelo.
I've been studying 'the fox Reynard' for quite some time!
