He doesn't look up as they walk past him. He never looks up. The young snakes laugh, they gossip, they slouch; they talk about this and that, girls, teachers, achievements...whatever the hot topic may be.
Sometimes, he knows, they also talk about him. He would then pretend to be engrossed in his book, so they'd get the impression that he's not listening. How often had he wished them to be right about that notion. But he's always hearing them.

- "Heh, look...there he goes again, sitting around with his book."
- "Don't you also think that he's kinda...odd?"
- "Odd? Rather arrogant. He never talks to us, he wouldn't even look you in the eyes. No wonder he's always alone."
- "You think he's having any friends at all?"
- "Not on your life. Have you seen his desk, how tidy it always looks? Worse than the adults. What a dweeb."
- "He would also never say anything during class."
- "Bet he thinks he's better than the rest of us."

Some of them may even get so bold to act especially obtrusive, bothering him as impudent as possible. With words, with gestures, with offensively intruding into his privacy.
He would then always get up - and leave without saying a word, searching for another place to be all by himself. They know that he's doing this, how easy it is to shoo him away. And apparently, they like that, because they're repeating it on a regular basis. Goddess knows why (he wouldn't even argue against having friends in the first place; but for this, he is "too odd" after all)
One thing, though, they're right about. He enjoys being alone. How very unfortunate that this seems to be something that others can only hardly understand.

And thus, he again delves deep into his book. Books don't speak ill of him. Books don't care who you are.
