Great job! I agree that digital art has advantages like undoing mistakes and coloring etc but freehand has advantages too. I personally find you can get much more detail in with freehand than digital but that's just me. Anyway keep it up I'm sure you'll get perfect at freehand some day π

The folds in the clothing are well done and I like the high lights in the hair, makes a real good contrast.

-_- that seems like more of a pain in the neck than i initially thought... i didn't even like drawing with actual pen and paper to begin with

It gets more fun with time, particularly when you start using not only roller balls and felt tips, but brush pens, dip pens, and straight up ink brushes. It's amazing how versatile the ink medium is.Β
Believe me, I hated cross hatching at the beginning of this month and now I'm almost giddy plotting out my shading values.Β

man, i have no idea what you just said lol... i have absolutely no talent for real art so i make a lot of mistakes, i'm sticking with digital since there's a way to undo critical mistakes and not to mention it's quicker, it makes drawings from crappy artists like me actually look decent hahahaha

You're just gonna have to fill up sketchbooks, just like everybody else. Talent will set your art apart, but it won't necessarily make it better- so just throw yourself into it- I doubt that you'll regret that you did.
Digital, traditional, doesn't matter. You just need to do it.

Use daylight, especially on a cloudy day, your lighting is pretty even.

i just set the camera to "fill with flash," so i guess that's why the lighting is even, but some of the lighter shading i made was omitted
... i would want to use daylight, but i'm not used to positioning myself when taking a photo so my hands get kinda shaky

The problem with flash especially in a small cameras is it's insufficient power so manufacturers make a compromise, they assume most less expensive cameras are used to take people's faces so they concentrate most of the power in the center and let power fall off in the corners(take a shot of a blank white paper with flash, you'll notice). It also takes a bigger flash to make a more even surface, meaning more power is needed, notice how fashion photographers use huge soft boxes attached to their flash units which are always heavy battery or AC power- pack unit operated. That said you can put/tape a tissue paper in front the flash to spread the light more evenly, it acts like a mini soft box. If you use daylight do soft indirect light and not have the sun shine directly on your artwork. Also use the lowest ISO 'film' speed to get more detail like subtle shadings(disengage Auto). The higher the ISO speeds the less details in the highlights and shadows get captured in the camera sensor. Use the Speed setting and set it to at least 125 and up to avoid shake. If you use lower speeds, get a tripod, even a cheap one is steadier than your hands. May I ask what camera do you have?

-_- i don't really know much about cameras, it's just a compact camera i got since back in college, idk what its model is, it just says nikon coolpix... i don't really fiddle with it that much, as long as i know how to use the essentials, i'm happy with it

That's a Nikon point and shoot series which is quite good(I have used Nikon pro cameras for years)it's known that the tiny flash(in all point and shooters, not only Nikon) do give you hot spots, usually centers that get overexposed). Just try the tissue on the flash trick and see if things improve on highlight details (where the subtle shades are).if you use photoshop, play around with the contrast settings or curves, you can actually bring back the details if they are not blown out by the flash(flash is notorious for doing that, that's why I suggested cloudy daylight)
