Falconscreech stood and stretched, his ivory claws prickling into the softly-packed earth of MoonClan's darkened camp. Rays of sunlight glittered down onto the camp's floor, providing shafts of warmth. The tabby felt anger rip through him. He didn't know what he was doing here. He didn't know half of the cats – and the other half were more than likely to attack him due to his involvement with Dreamfrost's attacks on RainClan and SnowClan. Cedarkit was with Timidbreeze, so he didn't have to fret over the little scrap.

He looked over the camp, his normally fierce blue-green eyes dull. Ever since Dreamfrost was killed, his vivacious nature had died with her. Now, the tabby was swept up in waves of thundering rage, indifference, and deep mourning for his beloved mate. True, she had betrayed him in the end, but that didn't change the way he felt for the mysterious, dark she-cat. Sometimes, he dreamt that she lay of her beside him by night, there breathing in sync and sharing the warmth of their bodies in the cold den. But when he woke, there was no one beside him except for when the little ginger tomcat, Cedarkit, snuck away from his adoptive mother Timidbreeze to curl up beside his distant father.

A few cats were stirring now, mainly those who consisted of the dawn patrol and early hunting patrols. Falconscreech hated this. Hated being watched, like prey. He had a bodyguard for protection, supposedly. He suspected the cat who "guarded" him was truly meant to make sure either he didn't cause any trouble or another cat didn't instigate a battle. Falcobscreech, of course, would win any. Despite his loss, he was as angry and ferocious as ever. Any cat that dared look at him the wrong way received a dagger-like stare, and they quickly went about their business.

Bellpaw was up early, as usual, resting just outside the apprentice's den with a small piece of prey. She debated visiting her mother in the elder's den to share a meal, but there were a lot of cats in there she didn't know of, cats she wasn't exactly comfortable hanging around quite yet. Not until she was settled, and she knew her mother was settled with her new denmates. Even Bellpaw was wary around her new denmates, choosing to stay close to her siblings; even Yarrowpaw, who she'd gotten closer to since moving back to Moonclan. She was still nervous around her father, twitchy and uncomfortable around those she didn't know. It was difficult to trust even her mentor, Bloomingwillow, because of the fact she didn't know her well enough.

The small apprentice rose up from her place of rest, taking the scraps from her breakfast and bringing it near the outskirts of camps, and turning back to survey the camp. Cats were beginning to stir, the dawn patrol preparing to leave, waiting for one late awakened apprentice who was running to catch up with their mentor. Bellpaw pinned her ears to her head, letting her tail drag behind her as she moved across camp. She kept her eyes down, not even really sure what to do since her mentor had not told her the plan for today. Was she supposed to hunt? Explore? Rest? Tend to the elders? Being an apprentice was more stressful than she'd imagined as a kitten, but she could handle it. She could make it.

Her calming thoughts came to an abrupt stop as she gentle bumped her shoulders against another's and squeaked in surprise. She looked up, slightly fearful, and met the sharp eyes of a large warrior. "I-I, erm, I'm sorry. I wasn't watching where I was g-going!" she apologized quickly, stammering and stumbling over her own words, making fleeting eye contact with the older tom.

He had seen the little she-cat coming, though he wasn't prepared when she walked straight into him. Falconscreech took a quick step or two back as her head whipped around and her frightful blue eyes met his, wide with fear. Who did she remind him of? "I-I, erm, I'm sorry. I wasn't watching where I was g-going!" the she-cat stammered, her lower jaw quivering so hard he had to lean in to catch her words.

For some strange reason, he wasn't at all irritated or enraged by her obliviousness. Instead, as he gazed coldly into her wide blue eyes, he felt a twinge in him. But what was it? Falconscreech wasn't sure and didn't dare explore it. His fierce blue-green eyes softened slightly. "It's fine... you're too small to do any real damage, anyways," he muttered, looking away and over the camp again. He didn't want to meet those familiar eyes. They made him feel strange... That's it! This little cat reminded him of Flickerpaw. His friend. The first time they had met was on the journey.

Just like this little she-cat, Flickerpaw, then Flickerkit, bumped into him. He was an apprentice then. Crabby, frustrated, despairing. It was after the fire when Fernsplash died. These memories bubbled up inside of him, feelings of happiness – it was too much. He bit them down, stuffed them back into the recesses of his mind. He wasn't weak. The tabby wouldn't let useless memories distract him from the here and now. "What's you're name?" he asked absently, looking the she-cat in the eye.

He seemed to stare at her for a few moments, making her rather uncomfortable for the duration of his silence. Too small... Bellpaw was rather small, even for her young age, so she supposed compared to him it was more like a fly bumping against his shoulder more than anything. She looked down, breaking the eye contact, and let out a few gentle breaths to steady her voice and mind.

"O-Oh! My name is Bellpaw." she smiled softly, settling down carefully and wrapping her fluffy tail around her paws. She looked back up carefully, her almost violet eyes flickering across his face, searching for any indication interest. "I was named after those little bell flowers, apparently they were my mother's favorite flowers."Should she keep talking? Honestly, she was too nervous to stop, but she forced herself to clamp her maw shut to prevent unnecessary babbling She wasn't used to being asked much about herself, so she was practically an open book to most strangers; but something about the cat she was speaking with seemed vaguely familiar to her. "What's your name?"

"O-Oh! My name is Bellpaw." She smiled at him. At him. There wasn't much smiling going about here, especially whenever any cat drew near to him. They would stare at him, glare at him. It wouldn't be out of character for him to receive insults and accusations. After all, he did hurt cats. He killed cats, even. Despite that, their spite didn't bother him in the least. It was the sense of loss after Dreamfrost's death that tore him apart every time he thought of her. And that was why he avoided his only-surviving son. Besides, he was better off with Timidbreeze fretting over him than if Falconscreech were to try to talk to him.

The pale she-cat sat down, wrapping her tail over her petite forepaws. She watched him, as if searching for something. Approval? Anger? He wasn't sure what she expected. He hardly knew her, and her him. They weren't friends, not even really acquainted at this point. "I was named after those little bell flowers, apparently they were my mother's favorite flowers." This Bellpaw was about to speak again, but she closed her jaws abruptly. Her stream of words reminded Falconscreech of early-morning birdsong. Lively.

His ears twitched as he looked back down at her, and he sat back. Maybe a quick conversation wouldn't hurt. That was, until she asked who he was. The tabby was so startled she asked that he fought back a scoff. She was a fragile thing. If he were to react too negatively, she might run away... but why would he care if she did? It was puzzling to him. "Falconscreech," he said. He wondered what her reaction would be. Shock, fright, anger? It didn't much matter either way.

He seemed conflicted, in a way, which Bellpaw didn't understand until she heard his name. Her eyes widened a fraction, but she blinked to hide it. The apprentice stayed silent for a few moments, really unsure of how to respond. Of course she'd heard of Falconscreech; she'd been in Rainclan when it had happened, after all. She'd heard stories of what had happened after she'd left, during the war, and everything in between. It wasn't like she was afraid, well, she wasn't more afraid than she normally would be to be sitting next to a warrior who had the resting expression he did.

All she remembered was screaming, and then being whisked away, and then lots of crying. She was young, the only thing she was worried about was that her mother and siblings were still there when she had already been taken away. She didn't even know if what he did was true, exaggerated in any way. If he'd meant it, enjoyed it, in a sense. She didn't know what to ask next.

"Do you regret any of it?" is what she settled upon. She asked the words quietly, smoothly, without followup. Hopefully he'd know what she meant. After all, what had happened was famous, rather more infamous, or well known around the territories. She tried her best to keep her eyes up, but they nervously flickered around to his pelt, his scars, her own paws, and then back up to his eyes again.

For a long time, the pale she-cat was silent, thoughtful. "Do you regret any of it?" Bellpaw asked after some debate.

"My regrets? I never knew any of the cats I killed, so nothing in regards to that... As for the final battle, my deepest regret was that I wasn't by Dreamfrost's side in the end." He had been petty and angry, refusing to be near her. Falconscreech had wanted to kill her himself for her treachery, for replacing him for that brother of hers as deputy. He had known from the start that Hoperise wasn't interested in the least in joining their cause. He was meant as distraction, so the Clans could creep in the dark of the night like vipers waiting for the ambush, the kill. And Dreamfrost, like a fool, fell for it. But not Falconscreech. He had planned on leaving that night, leave the Clans, leave his mate to her fate. But then he remembered about their kits, where she buried them. He wanted to see them, so he stole into the dark, avoiding warriors and rogues alike, until he found them.

Much to his surprise, one survived. A little ginger tomcat. Cedarkit. Falconscreech took a few hours to warm the precious bundle before tucking him into the protective roots of an overturned tree and returned to the battle field. Subconsciously, he knew Dreamfrost wouldn't give up, wouldn't allow herself to be taken prisoner. He wanted her to live, to get to be the mother he knew she could be. He had fought and clawed and ripped and tore like all of LionClan and TigerClan combined to get to her. But when he did, she lay there lifeless, the blaze in her eyes faded. Hoperise was stretched out beside her, a nasty gash to his throat pooling blood around his muzzle and chest. They killed each other.

cupkit In reply to Vritra-Rising [2016-03-02 20:13:13 +0000 UTC]

Bellpaw listened to his response, squinting her eyes in confusion. Even if he didn't really know the cats he killed, they had cats who cared about them. Families, loved ones, friends. Did he not care about the cats he hurt not emotionally, but physically? The cats without parents, siblings, children anymore. She silently thanks Starclan that she still kept her family together and alive, even Hiccupfoot, after those vicious attacks. She thought about responding again, but noticed his look. He was remembering something, perhaps something painful? She couldn't read his expression, it was vague, cold, but of course his eyes gave away his distant thinking. That was something Bellpaw always like about watching other cats; their eyes betrayed them.

He was silent for much longer, deep in thought, and Bellpaw decided not to prompt him any further on the subject. Part of her mind reminded her that he was a killer, he had hurt so many and caused chaos throughout the clans. The other part remembered who he might be; a brother, a son, perhaps a father. She never found out what happened to his kits, but there must have been a good reason for coming back to Moonclan when he must have known how he'd be treated. How he'd be viewed and regarded by his fellow clanmates; as a traitor. That part of her felt that he might be hurting too, he might have suffered despite the suffering he had caused. Maybe he deserved a second chance too.

"I'm sorry." she whispered. It was all she could come up with, and she instantly hated herself for it. Pity might not be the best option here.

"Sorry... You're sorry?" Falconscreech chuckled, though it lacked any mirth. It should be me. I should feel some guilt for what I've done. I've ripped families apart, killed sons and daughters of cats. And yet... I can only focus on myself. What I've lost. Man, was he petty thing. Pathetic. Pitiful. Dreamfrost was right from the beginning. He was ridiculous and soft. An idiot. The usual vehemence in which he received pity from cats – only that from the cats he knew well – was used up. He was tired. Oh, so tired of driving them away. Somehow, whenever one of his littermates tried to talk to him, he was able to play the facade with little no effort. But this cat didn't know him. And he didn't have the energy to make the effort. He had pretended to be a monster, stoic, uncaring for the deeds he had done. He had caused his family so much grief, but he wouldn't admit it to them that he felt any remose. Better them think he a creature worse than dogs, foxes, or even twolegs than a son, a brother.

If they saw him for what he truly was, they would only pity him more. Try to cheer him up. Try to love him as they once had. But he didn't deserve any such kindness. He could blame Dreamfrost for his actions, but the truth was, he was in complete control. He watched his own sister die by Dreamfrost's fangs and did nothing. Falconscreech let out a huff. "Don't you have training to do?" the tabby snapped suddenly. Thinking hurt him. It once entertained him to no end to analyze things, to watch other cats. But now that was pointed inwards, and he didn't like what he saw. A broken cat. He still clung fruitlessly to the anger, the strength, he had used up to this point to be the powerful cat he was into apprenticeship and warriorhood. Falconscreech looked off into the shadows of the cave, looking for any distractions. But most cats were sleeping blissfully. The dawn patrol had left, and the hunting patrols, too. There was nothing left to keep his mind from wandering.

Bellpaw watched his emotions flicker across his face, changing and morphing, and it was really rather interesting. She had no idea what was going through, but he couldn't seem to accept her apology, or sympathy, whatever she thought she'd said earlier. That was dumb of her, but what else could she have said? 'Nothing, Bellpaw. You could have just said nothing.' She almost wished she had said nothing, not even sure if she was indeed sorry for him. Didn't he deserve to feel the shame, the guilt, the discomfort? Probably; but she couldn't watch any cat in discomfort, it made her uncomfortable.

His snap caught her off-guard and she flinched away, her eyes flickering shamefully down at her feet. Did she have training? She wasn't very close to her mentor, at least not yet, and didn't trust her very much yet. She'd be called if she did have training, though, so she knew she wasn't in trouble. She wasn't very good at training, anyways. Always tripping over her own feet, couldn't pick up a scent, weak with her attacks and all around, too nervous to actually try. She wouldn't make a very good warrior, so why bother training? 'Because your mother wants you to, because your father wants you to, because you want to make them proud. The thought almost made her scoff, but she rose from her spot, having spent several moments in silence. "Not really, but sorry for bothering you, I guess." His irritable tone only confirmed her thoughts that she talked too much, and was mot likely unwelcome. She could find another place to be.

[Falcon hides all his emotions and thoughts, so I don't think she'd really see anything... He's practiced since early apprenticeship.]

The pale she-cat flinched, her blue eyes dropping to her small forepaws. Bellpaw was silent for a few moments before getting to her paws, looking saddened. "Not really, but sorry for bothering you, I guess." A gentle soul. Falconscreech felt a pang, a guilt. Although he snapped and snarled from time to time, this was the only interaction he had had aside from Flickerpaw. He wouldn't apologize for his actions – that was a sign of weakness – but he didn't exactly want the small she-cat to leave in this state.

He allowed his features to soften despite the outburst, just slightly. "How long have you been an apprentice?" It was the best he could come up with. In RainClan, he hardly cared, but he was sure he had seen this she-cat at some point. The tabby wondered how many apprentice ceremonies he hadn't paid any particular attention to.

[more sensing his frustration/indecision i suppose. Bell is a weirdo and likes to watch eyes, and those can often flicker when thinking in a way; interpret it as you will ;v; ]

His question sparked a bit of curiosity in Bellpaw, causing her to hesitate in her departure. What happened to his abrasive dismissal? She wouldn't delve too much into his actions, after all, who knew what he was actually thinking? That was for him and him alone to know. Instead, she turned back, but refused to make eye contact. she kept her gaze in the distance, upon the walls of the camp as she spoke.

"Only a moon or so, really. Right after we all came home, I was apprenticed with my siblings and a few other kits." she mumbled, slightly under her breath, but loud enough to be heard. She really hadn't spoken to her family since her ceremony, besides her mother. Her sisters and brother were galavanting off the become great warriors without her, and her father continued to be a great warrior himself. Bellpaw had always thought she'd be training under the slight cover of trees and overhanging rocks, streams trickling from every which way in Rainclan's old territory. It was the first home she'd ever known.

Bellpaw froze for a moment, debating. Of what, he was sure whether or not she should leave. Falconscreech sat back on his haunches, raising a hind paw and tilting his head to scratch at a slight itch right behind his jawline – though, it was more of an excuse to get his limbs moving than anything else. He stopped and dropped his hindleg when she spoke again, murmuring, "Only a moon or so, really. Right after we all came home, I was apprenticed with my siblings and a few other kits."

Her eyes held a certain sadness to them. Not of misery or depression... And the tabby tom couldn't quite place it. Falconscreech swallowed, his brows furrowing in thought. This was so alien to him – just talking. He didn't really speak unless he had something to say. Carrying on a relaxed conversation was so foreign to him, except for when he was with Flickerpaw. He wouldn't really speak to any other cat. Then again, most other cats wouldn't even look at him, much less try striking up a conversation. "What have you, uh, learned so far? Who's your mentor?" He was trying, at least.

Bellpaw couldn't really tell if he was interested in what she had to say or not, but at this point she felt it would be strange to not answer. "Bloomingwillow. I don't know her all that well, to be honest. We've learned the, um, basics of hunting and I did a little bit of sparring yesterday." she recounted the training, her tail twitching irritably behind her. She didn't really like fighting like that. It made her uncomfortable to make it seem like she was harming a clanmate.

"Do you, or, um, did you ever have an apprentice?" She didn't know if Fallenstar would give him an apprentice at this point, but she didn't really know how long he'd been a warrior. He could have trained someone, or begun training someone in that time. He didn't seem like the mentoring type to her, but he didn't seem like any type to her right now. She knew nothing about him, and she guessed that no one really did. She wondered if he cared about his family, if he had any friends, and soon she was lost in thought, her gaze a little hazy like she was day dreaming.
