Wow. I just binge read the whole thing from the beginning to here at 1 am [lol rip tonight's Japanese course review]. I found it from someone's illustration moment of Bluestar giving Tigerclaw his 9th life. Warriors was something I used to be SUPER into, but fell out of somewhere along the way... largely when it started to be less about clan culture and struggles, and more about the various romances. I miss it from time to time - but when I picked up where I left off, I read through the whole book only to arrive at the final page going '...I was just getting into it, something was finally about to happen and... it's over, nothing happened'. I was quite sad. I wish I could be into Warriors again, sometimes.
This is exactly the sort of story that would have me back into Warriors.
The style is phenomenal. I'm always in hot pursuit of a specific set of characteristics in my art style, and it's one that's GREATLY departed from this style. Not the anatomy, nor the shapes, nor the colors, nor the coloring style would be anything I'd list in my style ideals. Not to bore you with the details, but suffice it to say, if someone described your style to me, I'd probably say 'oh, good for them, not really my thing'.
This comic is exactly why I need to NOT do that. It's cartoonish, simple, and yet feels incredibly unique and memorable. It's incredibly emotive, and with the firm control over the posing, expressions, colors, special lineart style... Everything about it is just so confidently what it is, and it makes everything shine SO BRIGHTLY. Just... fantastic.
Your writing and pacing is equally awesome. I never felt like any of the pages were a 'slog'. Everything made me that much more interested in the next page. There's real depth that you could plumb to character issues, whether the story means to explore them or not. I feel like this is definitely one of those stories where you wouldn't be surprised to hear it's author say 'for every page of story, there's three pages of extra detail about every scene and character's reasoning - whether the viewer will ever get to know ALL of that information is unlikely, but it's all grounded in a very solid bedrock'.
I need to go back and study your emotive talents, as well as some of the really neat paneling choices you make - specifically, the wash into dreamland when Rusty meets Ravenpaw was awesome, and I love the flowers as symbolism - the page where you were worried it was hard to imagine it being a flashback over the clover? I totally got that it was. The sort of surreal linger panel over just lone flowers really gave you this detached feeling that set up the 'flashback' feeling really well. Your sense of how to set up a scene is great. The style is so simple, and yet I feel like the backgrounds are so detailed... They set the tone of scenes so well!! Aaah. Almost 'concept art' in a way - where you really get the sense of a place and a story, in the punchiest sort of vibe.
Your descriptions sound like you have a lot of stress and anxiety in your life. I really hope that you can take away from this comic that whatever you are afraid you're not good enough for, creating this content is not something you need feel inadequate for. This is AMAZING stuff, and I cannot wait for the next pages!! I need to know how this AU pans out!!
