Description This is a circular wing attack aircraft.
Inside the wing there is a big, powerfull fan actuated by the hot gases from the two main turboshaft engines. The lift fan can be switched off by diverting the hot gases to the rear nozzles, and the doors can be closed as seen here.
This aircraft can float at low level to confront armoured vehicles on the ground as well as helicopters flying low.

This looks quite a lot like the Chance-Vought XF5U-1 Flying Flapjack from the 1940s.Β  (oldmachinepress.files.wordpres… ) Was that the inspiration for it?

Great artwork. Can you add spec info to it?

I can sit for hours and watch this eyecandy
Ever thinking about release a book with all your conceptual
aircraft projects? I would buy that ASAP!

Like the design. Quite realistic.

It is based off a prototype fighter from WW2.

For this to work, the nacelles need to be on the very tips of the disk and spinning opposite to the vortexes generated at the disk tip/edge.

See here => [link]

Also search for youtube images/footage of the XF5U-1

Also, the ducted/lifting fan? Also another thing researched by Vought.

Though the experimental designation escapes me at this time.

Awesome work as always!

Much cheers to you and yours.

The internal fan... is it just a single, large, fan?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CUTANGUS In reply to Frenotx [2012-06-07 20:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Driven by hot exhaust gases diverted from the two turboshaft engines by valves.

You'll likely run into problems with the rotational inertia (helicopters have tail rotors for a reason ), and the gyroscopic effect (why bikes don't fall over when the tires are spinning). Not 100% sure about the rotational inertia bit, if the fan is strictly being driven by the turboshaft engines' exhaust, and no dedicated engine. The gyro effect will certainly cause problem if trying to roll or pitch with the fan engaged, though.

Actually..engine rotational inertia is only a problem when the engine is connected to the blades.

An auto-gyro has free spinning blades and hence no tail rotor as an example.

Much cheers to you and yours.

hmmm... I think I've seen this design before... is this based on a WWII era German design?! Bamf!!!

ONI-Defense In reply to AltoCeyx [2013-06-18 20:15:16 +0000 UTC]

It is based on a real design from that era, the US built, Vought XF5U.
