From an objective point of view, this image is very successful. The cat's head is the focal point, which leads the eye to see what the cat is sitting on (another person, hehe), then our eye sees the second person in the image. The eye is lead by the hand directly to what needs to be seen. very clever. However, the cat's flank is in slightly sharper focus than its head, a slight criticism. The exposure of this shot is good- neither over nor under-exposed, which is especially impressive as it was taken indoors.

The tones are lovely and appropriately subdued- they portray the feelings of relaxation, comfort and communal sleep in this scene of verisimilitude very well.

What I enjoy most about this shot lies in its naturalism. Unlike so many shots on DA, this scene was not contrived within a brightly lit studio or planned out by a goth chick on a college photography course. It is a real scene taken by a real person who decided to capture this moment spontaneously in its real, everyday lighting conditions. And for this I thank her.

For all its small downfalls, such as lack of originality and the fact that it is slightly off-focus, this is still a lovely, well photographed scene. Well done!

One slight disagreement, I'm a 'he' and not a 'her' haha

Haha no worries, I try not to make it obvious on here to void bias so it's not your fault at all!

That, and I prefer people to look at my work and be unaffected by who I am...
I want the picture to speak more for itself than for me

A lot of people use the word 'gorgeous' in the wrong context, but this shot is entirely gorgeous. I engorge myself upon it, then feel all full up!

Thank you for sharing this really lovely illustration of verisimilitude.

Lovely shot!

How come you didn't mention who the third person (the cat chair ) is?

Haha the other person is Sam's girlfriend. I'll edit the description

Btw, did you edit this at all, in PS or anything?

*please say no, please say no... *

No photoshop
I used to work at Jessops and they still let me develop my own film so I get to control the colour balance straight from scanning

Hm...

Still editing, which I would never do myself, but I guess it is better than PS to a degree.

You're lucky you're telling me this now. If I'd have known sooner I'd have marked you down on technique...

Hey! I only set the colour balance, that's not too much is it?

tractern In reply to da5nsy [2010-08-08 10:33:04 +0000 UTC]

For me, for a film shot, yes it's too much, but each to their own!

da5nsy In reply to tractern [2010-08-08 11:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Hmm ok, you've got to do that to scan the film though, there's not really a way around it

tractern In reply to da5nsy [2010-08-08 16:02:24 +0000 UTC]

Just don't adjust the colours before you print the negs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

da5nsy In reply to tractern [2010-08-08 21:22:17 +0000 UTC]

Haha I'll bear that in mind if I can ever afford to do so

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tractern In reply to da5nsy [2010-08-08 21:58:54 +0000 UTC]

Why would it cost any more?

Okay, don't make prints, but don't adjust the colours when you scan negs/ positives.

Anyway, that's what I would do, but they're YOURS, so do what you like with them!

da5nsy In reply to tractern [2010-08-08 23:58:03 +0000 UTC]

The guys at Jessops usually let me develop and scan my stuff on the sly but they'd kick off if I printed stuff as well
haha thankyou
on a related note - are there filters around to cancel out overly yellow indoor light? I'd presume so but I wouldn't know where to start looking

tractern In reply to da5nsy [2010-08-09 00:25:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes, here: [link] It will make colours colder, but everything won't be yellow, which is good and I think what you are looking for. Make sure you get one with the right thread size of course!
