Portrait of Damon Graham Devereux Hill OBE (b. 17 September 1960), 1996 Formula 1 World Champion, and the only son of a F1 world champion to hold the same title. (His father was the late Graham Hill, two-time F1 champion, and the only winner of the Triple Crown of Motorsport). His induction into the world of racing came late - he started racing motorcycles at the late age of 23 before moving up all the way to Formula 1 as a test driver for the Williams team in 1991. He was promoted to the race team in 1993 after Nigel Mansell, then reigning champion, left the team, and assigned the number "0" - the second man in F1 history to hold the number.

Hill's first year of racing ended with a third place in the drivers' standings. He might have won the championship the next year, but for a controversial collision with Michael Schumacher at the season-closing Australian GP, which forced both drivers out of the race, and the title was handed to Schumacher. He failed to beat Schumacher the next year as well, despite being one of the title favourites; with only four wins, Hill's 1995 season was a disappointment, and Frank Williams was beginning to consider replacing him with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Ironically, Hill's final season with the Williams team ended with him winning the 1996 World Championship.

Yes, I'm nuts. Tell me something I don't already know. Seriously, I don't know what was worse: painting that trophy, or the damned stitching and sponsor logos.

I know... more paintings of people that nobody's heard of or cares about (with the possible exception of *ZedderZulu and *LatteBleu ). Sorry! It's just that I've been wanting to do this since - forever, really, and after that Wayne Rainey painting, I just had to follow it up with this one. The overalls, car and helmet colours are duller than in real life; i was trying to achieve a slightly aged effect with the picture. Call it artistic license. I initially wanted his 1996 car in the picture, but the more I thought about it, the thing I remembered most clearly about his races was his number "0" car, so nostalgia trumps sensibility this time around, I'm afraid!

Oh, and in case that background texture looks familiar - it's that book one that I've pretty much used to death.
