Description "Why do you want to climb Mount Everest?"
"Because it's there."
George Herbert Leigh Mallory (18 June 1886 - 8?9? June 1924), British mountaineering legend. He and his partner Andrew "Sandy" Comyn Irvine disappeared on 8 June 1924 during the third British Everest Expedition while attempting a first ascent . Mallory's body was found 75 years later on 1 May 1999. Irvine's has not yet been found; and the question of whether they ever reached the summit remains a subject of research and debate.

I like to think George and Andrew did get there but the problem is that the trick (as Hillary and Norkay would have said) is to come back after getting there.

Inspirational. Even if he didn't reach the summit.

Haha, I'll leave that bit to be debated on by the veteran climbers and Everest experts. But yes, Mallory's an inspiration - and not just to climbers either!

Brilliant rendition of the man who showed us that it's not just important to get to the top, it's also important to get back down.

Oh.

This was what Sir Edmund Hillary had to say on the matter: "If you climb a mountain for the first time and die on the descent, is it really a complete first ascent of the mountain? I am rather inclined to think personally that maybe it is quite important, the getting down, and the complete climb of a mountain is reaching the summit and getting safely to the bottom again."

I just thought you were paraphrasing this, is all!

No, no, that was my independent observation - mostly based off a childhood in the outback where it's rather critical to plan how you're going to get back from any given place before you plan how you're going to get there.
